I am not in agreement that flogging constitutes "cruel and unusual punishment." It is only unusual now that it was abandoned. For centuries it was judiciously applied. Certain offenses cry out for the application of the lash.

Sharia calls for amputation of body parts as punishment for certain offenses. I think we can all agree which body parts ought to be amputated to A) prevent an offender from committing another such offense. and B) make clear to other Muslims that raping 11 year old girls is absolutely not OK in our neck of the woods.

And yes, I am an unreconstructed barbarian.

Any dog owner can tell you that animals are sentient. We are only beginning to scratch the surface of understanding the various levels of intelligence and communication abilities in other mammalian species, birds, and even plants for that matter.

That doesn't mean that we are going to stop killing and eating them. After all, it is only rather recently that we stopped killing and eating each other as a general practice. Some folks are still practicing cannibals. Now that I think of it, I might enjoy having Barron Trump over for a barbecue.

Back in the day when we kids ran our own games, winning and losing didn't matter so much, because we were playing. Unless you were a complete spaz you got to play. Even in the organized games with adult coaching, playing time was pretty evenly distributed, but rosters were limited. Some kids didn't make the cut.

We did learn fairly quickly that only a few of us had the drive, size, and skills to succeed at the varsity level. Even those of us who did most dropped off in the transition from high school to college. What is important in life is finding one's niche and working to be skilled in that. (Working is a bad word. We enjoy doing our natural job.)

I agree with Estreeter here. While the kids figure out that adults are full of shit, they are not prepared for the real world with its performance standards, politics, firings, lay-offs, etc. These are painful experiences, but bouncing up when life knocks you down is the most important skill of all.
