Transfered VHS tapes
What are you doing with your old VHS once you have transfered them to your PC ?
These tapes take a lot of space, and I have decided to degitized them and then to throw them away, but I would like to know what others are doing. Thanks PlusOultre

Would like to do that myself. Not sure how to do it but do not want to buy one of those 3 in 1 player things. What did you do?

I bought a USB video capture card, VCAP810, in fact, from Amazon. Cost about £20 and seems to be transferring stuff really well. I would also suggest that unless you are keeping backups of everything you digitise, you will at some point lose it all, when a hard drive fails etc. I kept my vhs when I went onto DVD, and have had to recopy some of them. I will be making backups of the digitised video too.

I have a dedicated card in my PC, from Hauppauge.
www.hauppauge.com This card was in the PC when I buy it, it is a basic one (WinTV-PVR-150), but it does the job for me. You have to connect your VCR to this card, and then you can see the video on your PC screen, and record it on the hard-disk. The quality is good, but the file is huge (4GB for 1h30). Hope it can help you.

I store these films (and all the rest of my virtual collection : pictures, scans, ...) on an external NAS with 2 drives of 1TB (1000 GB) in RAID1.
RAID1 means that each drive is a live copy of the other. So, in case of a crash disk, you still have your data on the second one.

Whether you decide to keep the original VHS tapes or not mainly depends on the storage space you have available I think.

I keep my transfers on Western Digital 2 TB external hard drives. I hope to get a couple of their 4 TB ext hard drives in the future. Eventually I plan on copying the content of one ext hard drive to another, just so I have 2 in case one crashes I won't lose my material.
As far as the VHS tapes, I started out trying to sell them on e-bay but realized a lot of the titles are not that rare and it's not worth the hassle. Bidders don't want to pay that much and complain about the cost of shipping. Shipping is expensive, plus you have the auction fees. I now make sure I have a good transfer, good box scans, and that it's saved in my ext hard drive. I then throw away the VHS tapes. Now, on RARE VHS titles I do plan on putting them up on e-bay just to keep them in circulation and get some of my money back for them. I often spend quite a bit to get hard to find titles. |

After transfer to PC by MPEG format I convert them to free XviD AVI format. These files are very compact: instead 2 h up to 4.7 GB DVD file you get some at 700 to 900 MB. Additional advantages while & after converting: re-size possible and easy video cut to remove e.g. black margins.
Quality of transferred movie mainly depends by VHS tape itself and clean VHS recorder heads. Don't forget to clean at least regulary; there is more lot of dust and smoke attached at tapes you think. (Recommend 70 vol% iso-propyl alcohol and cotton swab.)

Off-air recordings sit on a shelf where they slowly get eaten by mould...
My purchased tapes are put away, with their DVD transfers tucked inside them.

Thanks Ragapart and PlusOultre, I've looked online for both these type of things. I'll let you know how it goes, who knows I might then learn how to upload and share those I have not already posted on VEF
