Kevin Spacey can't get a job either and Asia Argento is in big trouble. Fear not, Kavanaugh will be able to keep his job at the very worst. In all likelihood he will be confirmed next week.

It did occur to me that Mrs. Ford may have been hoping that other accusers would come forth. Clearly, this was a very traumatic episode for her, but I suspect it was a one off for Kavanaugh.

There was a incident in high school where one of my male friends started rough housing with a girl that he didn't know all that well. He didn't mean any harm, but she got really upset. They are good friends all these years later, but I suspect that that was where he learned that you can't just treat a woman like one of the guys.

We've gotten to a very bad place when random allegations from the past are held to something more than "someone said".

Again, I really don't like Kavanaugh, and I think there were ample reasons to vote against his nomination before the allegation -- just as I felt about Clarence Thomas.

But we're in a very strange place where "someone says something unverified and unverifiable, and now you're screwed"

That's just no way to run a society. I'm not suggesting that all such charges are unwarranted, btw. We've got plenty of examples of old allegations which turned out to be true. We've also got plenty of examples of such allegations which didn't.

There's a lot of reason to prefer due process of law to denunciation . . . note what an ugly mess we've got brewing-- Rose McGowan and Asia Argento in a worm ourobouros of mutual denunciation. Ronan Farrow pursuing Woody Allen like Inspector Javert across decades, over an allegation which is disputed and about whose accuracy we can never say more than "I don't know".

We've had folks disqualified for less, to be sure-- Judge Ginsburg (not RBG, Douglas) dinged because the press found reports that he'd smoke marijuana back in the day-- but I objected to that then, and I would now too.

This is a dangerous place, and it belongs to the world of conspiracy think. So much bad stuff rests on "Believe the" trumping "what evidence is there that"

Anyone who starts a defense by saying that what he's accused of "doesn't sound so bad" is acknowledging that they think he did it. So far that includes Franklin Graham and Mitch McConnell.
