Belgian ex-motor cross champion Eric "The Kid" Geboers (age 55) died today after he jumped from a boat in a lake to save a puppy that fell overboard. We had a few pretty hot days here but the water in such lakes is still very cold, which is probably what caused him to drown.
Geboers was the first motorcrossr racer to ever win all 3 classes of the World Championships (125, 250 and 500 cc). http://sporza.be/cm/sporza/auto_moto...ross/1.3193034 (link in dutch) |

Belgian singer dies days after comeback
Days after she gave her first stage performance in two years, Belgian singer Maurane has died aged 57. Maurane was found dead at her home in Schaerbeek, near Brussels, on Monday evening. The cause of death is not yet known but is not seen as suspicious. She was best known in recent years for her role in a TV talent show for young singers, Nouvelle Star (New Star). She had been forced to halt her singing career in 2016 because of problems with her vocal cords. Born Claudine Luypaerts, she was known across the French-speaking world and had performed with artists including Celine Dion and Johnny Hallyday. She had returned to the stage in Brussels at the weekend, taking part in a concert in tribute to the late Jacques Brel, one of Belgium's most famous singer-songwriters. She was preparing to go on tour in spring 2019.

Scientist David Goodall, 104, ends his life
Scientist David Goodall, 104, has died after choosing to end his life at a clinic in Switzerland, a right-to-die organisation says. The lauded London-born ecologist and botanist, who was not terminally ill, said the decision had been driven by his deteriorating quality of life. Mr Goodall had flown from Australia for his assisted suicide, attracting the attention of people around the world. In his final public appearance, he said the public interest had surprised him. "I no longer want to continue life," he told reporters on Wednesday. "One wants to, at my age, even rather less than my age... to be free to choose death when the death is at an appropriate time."
The academic died "peacefully" at 12:30 (10:30 GMT) at the Life Cycle clinic in Basel, from an infusion of Nembutal, a barbiturate, said Philip Nitschke, founder of Exit International, the group which helped him take his own life. In his final minutes he was played Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th symphony. Mr Goodall's last meal was his favourite - fish and chips and cheesecake. He wanted no funeral and requested that his body be donated to medicine or his ashes sprinkled locally, the group said. Assisted suicide does not increase the number of deaths, what it does do is significantly reduce the suffering of a chronically ill person. RIP

Body confirmed as missing singer
A body found at a marina on the banks of the Firth of Forth has been confirmed as missing Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison. The discovery was made at Port Edgar, between the Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing, at about 20:30 on Thursday. Mr Hutchison, 36, went missing in the early hours of Wednesday morning. His family said there had been recent concerns about his mental health, and they were "devastated" by his death. Mr Hutchison had spoken openly about his battle with depression over the years, with elder brother Neil saying he had done so "in an attempt to help other people with similar conditions". In a statement released on Friday, the family said Mr Hutchison "wore his heart on his sleeve, and that was evident in the lyrics of his music and the content of many of his social media posts. "He was passionate, articulate and charismatic, as well as being one of the funniest and kindest people we knew. Friends and family would all agree that he had a brilliant sense of humour and was a great person to be around."
The statement added that relatives had "remained positive and hopeful that he would walk back through the door, having taken some time away to compose himself". And it described Mr Hutchison as a "wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend" who always had time for those he cared for. "Depression is a horrendous illness that does not give you any alert or indication as to when it will take hold of you", it added. "Scott battled bravely with his own issues for many years and we are immensely proud of him for being so open with his struggles. "His willingness to discuss these matters in the public domain undoubtedly raised awareness of mental health issues and gave others confidence and belief to discuss their own issues." The singer and guitarist had last been seen on CCTV footage leaving the Dakota Hotel in nearby South Queensferry at 01:00 on Wednesday. Two hours earlier, he had tweeted: "Be so good to everyone you love. It's not a given. I'm so annoyed that it's not. I didn't live by that standard and it kills me. Please, hug your loved ones." Shortly afterwards, he added: "I'm away now. Thanks." News of Mr Hutchison's death sparked tributes from fans and musicians. Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody paid tribute on Instagram to "one of Scotland's most extraordinary song writers". He said Mr Hutchison "wrote with such profound insight into loss and longing and listening to his words always made me feel this heady mix of wonder, elation and pain. "That pain that also makes you feel someone understands what you're going through and you don't feel so alone".
