I keep reading about IrfanView.

http://www.irfanview.com/

Has anyone had any problems with it? I understand it's supposed to be easy to download and view. Also, it claims to be a very useful tool.

When referring to Irfanview, the word 'useful' is an understatement.
It has been my #1 image viewer for a decade. It's also a movie viewer, graphics file manager, batch converter and a lot more. It's not without reason it's in one of the guides in my sig.

Just clicked on your sig and there's nothing there. '404 Not Found' message appears.

Like Jism Jim, I have used Irfanview for more than a decade as a primary image viewer, wave/midi player, etc. I have never had any problems with it or its the plugins.

It is small, incredibly fast, configuarable, and better than any other viewer I have ever seen. There are times since Windows 98 when I have had more than 40+ instances of Irfanview running simultaneously without any problems and with full useability in each instance.

Try it with or without its plugins--it's is easy to uninstall.

For Mac-based folks, the equivalent to Irfan is Lemkesoft's "Graphic Converter".

Its very powerful. Its been around forever, and its very powerful, but with a lot of Unix-y batch functionality hidden behind the OSX UI. Powerful scripting

Its a rather different philosophy than iPhoto, which hides your base files away. Now includes a very nice editor.

Not free, but cheap, and well worth it for anyone with lots of photos on the Mac.

Unless you are a master video editor you probably can not do this without loss of quality. wmv, mp4 and avi are already compressed. You will have to use a stronger compression to save space. Stronger compression will result in reduced quality.
I don't know why you want to reduce file size, but I suggest you get a larger HD.

I'd generally second what JismJim said, with one caveat: if your source files were a poor quality rip, they can actually be much larger than they need to be.

That is, sometimes folks will do a rip of an old VHS tape that's at much higher data rates than the theres actual data in the source.

Handbrake will do a good job of evaluating source and producing a smaller file, IF the source is wasteful. As JJ notes, in general, if you're reducing the size of a competently produced file, you're going to losing data, and there's a lot of expertise required to get settings right to do so-- given how cheap disks are, generally isn't worth the trouble.

Handbrake is also good for transcoding source for a different target -- if you have a big Bluray 1080 rip, that's going to be a waste for watching on your phone. note: if you upload to YouTube, they automatically compress big stuff to a variety of smaller formats, it's a handy way of doing a multi format down sample, if you have content which can be uploaded to YouTube.
