Here we go again. America needs more guns, obviously.

It's not just the left that support Roe v Wade. Unwanted children are thought to have been a factor in the high crime rates of the past. Most crime studies I have read state that legalized abortion was one of the factors in the lower crime rates in the decades after Roe v Wade. If you accept the concept of Stare Decisis, https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/stare_decisis the law is decided and a three month old fetus does not have the protection given to a human being.
It's a woman's body and she should have a reasonable choice in what happens to it. I doubt the majority of people want to provide support for unwanted children or suffer the consequences of these people growing up, so I don't see it ever changing. It is in keeping with the culture of this country. We are a pro death nation. Pro choice, pro gun, pro death penalty. That is the US that I know. You may not like parts of it, but at least we are consistent. |

As the news keeps banging on about a wedding I don't care about I prefer to point out that today is Cup Final day in England and Scotland. I hate the fact that they moved the F.A Cup Final to 5.15 a few years back and then pondered about 'What happened to the magic of the F.A Cup.' But it does allow me to watch both. I loath both Man. U and Celtic so I'm cheering on Chelsea and Motherwell. Off to by some cider and snacks in an hour.

But on the point of school spree killings, America is wildly out of control and has for decades been in denial about the social problems she suffers, caused directly by uncontrolled gun ownership. This is now a Dutch auction in which nutters compete with each other for who can commit the worst atrocity. As long as the USA refuses to recognise that guns are the problem, not "people", then this situation can only get worse and worse, as it has been doing since the 1990s if not before. Americans need to stop wailing "Secoooond Ameeendment!...Secooooond Ameeeendment!" like those scumbag bastards did in the public enquiry meeting in Newtown Connecticut when the father of one the murdered infants dared to point out that uncontrolled gun ownership had made this awful crime possible. It is time to face up to facts, and in fact the USA is the only developed country which allows and encourages unrestricted gun ownership and is also the place where more than 90% of these school atrocities routinely happen. There is a link between these things.

I understand your position Scoundrel, and if I lived in a country where I couldn't own guns I would probably agree with you. However I live in a country where we probably have 400 million plus guns in circulation with another 5 million being added each year. So the idea that mental defectives who want to avenge their being bullied or try to beat the record for most kills in a shooting will be stopped from legally or illegally from getting their hands on a gun is pretty far fetched. Pistols are identified as being the weapons used in over 90% of murders in the US and the last poll I saw said 71% of people will not support banning them, thus it is easy to see nothing will happen with them. (The high score for a school shooting was done with pistols - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Tech_shooting Since rifles (not just assault rifles) kill around 400 per year out of over 10,000 murders, any restriction on them will not make much of a difference.
So if you live in the US, you get use to people killing each other (usually criminals killing criminals), usually with guns, but looking at London, I am sure we could adapt to changing circumstances too. I have been waiting for years for someone to go murder more little kids in a school setting but that hasn't happened yet (lack of truly sick murderers I guess). Spraying fire into a crowds hasn't been copycatted yet, but some nut or terrorist must be planning that future event. No one seems to be trying to kill more kids in a school bombing - like the 38 kids and 6 adults killed in 1927 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster - so the idea that widespread destruction with explosives in a school setting hasn't caught on. However, people going nuts with guns is going to occur randomly in the US for the foreseeable future. That may sound terrible to hear, but actually seeing it or losing someone to such an event is unlikely in your lifetime. So most Americans don't do anything about it. On the contrary, if you study the polls, more Americans seem adamant that no laws get past to ban pistols than ever before. http://news.gallup.com/poll/1645/guns.aspx Note in 1959, 60% wanted to ban handguns, but lately it is under 30%. The number who want no ban on handguns has increased from 36% in 1959 to consistently over 70% currently. So it is pretty clear to see that nothing much will change. You can blame the NRA all you want, but it is the people in the US who choose this way of life and it is pretty clear that we will not change. |
