[currently unsolvable] threads with phantom messages
I noticed that some threads I have subscribed to show a new message when really there is not one - perhaps this one has been deleted, or moved to another thread, I don't know.
That I would not mind too much, but what is really annoying is the following: if the last message of a thread is one of those phantom messages and I am subscribed to the thread then the thread always shows up in my New Subscribed Threads panel. It does not help to visit the thread, it will still show up the next time. At the moment I have this issue with the Classic Italian Celebrities thread where the last post is a phantom message by mcol, but this is not the first time that I have observed this. Can this phenomenon be circumvented? |

it's a bug of the vbulletin version we're using and is indeed based on moved/removed posts. that your subscription stays with status "new posts available" is simply reasoned by the situation that you can't visit the post which is still "in the mind" of your subscription.
even if there are workarounds to fix this problem for each thread separatly i recommend to silently accept this little bug and don't care about it (cause otherwise we moderators would have much to do fixing this stupid bug each time we have to remove the newest post from a thread) just curious - have you ever tried to unsubscribe from such a thread and then subscribe again? and if so, does that help? |

I haven't. Can't try it at the moment as Classic Italian Celebs now had a new post, but I keep that thought in my mind the next time it happens...

(I don't imagine this helps other than to confirm the bug) |

I had something similar happen to one of my posts, but I didn't notice how it affected the subscription to that thread in my CP. Details as follows:
I made a post in the Rene Bond thread in Classic Pornstars, but my imagehost (Pimpandhost) temporarily stopped displaying the images. That post was originally deleted, but in a PM discussion with Blondifan, we noted that the images had returned. Blondifan elected to restore the post and we went on with our lives. Except the post became a "phantom" post. It showed up on my recent post list but wasn't visible in the thread itself. It wasn't until argoman made a new post on that thread that my post returned, at the same point where it should have been in the thread. Unfortunately, this all happened during the period of time which was lost during the database crash, so linking to the thread now is no help. All those PMs are up in smoke, too. |

I clumsily tried to explain this phenomenon a few weeks ago. It's happened to me a handful of times and the only fix seems to be when someone eventually adds a newer post after the phantom (good term btw). But when it happens in threads that infrequently get updated with fresh posts, the only course of action is to unsubscribe. If the phantom post bothers you, that is.

I have over the years somehow become unsubscribed to several good threads, and though this is slightly different, is is none less annoying when you find you've missed a video link that is now defunct due to not having seen the update....
thank god for being here often enough that I can use the 'posts today' hotlink, once i've checked my user cp first.....

http://www.vintage-erotica-forum.com/showthread.php?t=17952I have visited the thread, also unsubscribed & then renewed the subscription to this thread, but it still shows-up with the last post made by Acastus on 02-16-13 (presumably a deleted post?) I don't want it hanging in my subs, but i also don't want to unsubscribe & forget the thread |
