Scoundrel, I, and most historians, would disagree with everything you wrote. I will ignore most of it, but I just can't let this pass. "The first" of European nations to abolish slavery? Well, except for France in 1315, Sweden in 1335, Poland in 1347, Spain in 1537, and Portugal in 1570.

The last American state in the North to abolish slavery was New Jersey in 1830.

Finally Britain abolished it in 1833. Except for colonies.

It's hilarious and horrifying at the same time

"European Research Group henchman Steve Baker MP has declared that the four Eurosceptics who have quit the cabinet – Boris Johnson, David Davis, Dominic Raab and Esther McVey – should decide which one of them will run as a Brexit PM. What a banquet of choice for the British people that would be. According to YouGov polling this week, Boris Johnson’s approval ratings are currently minus 35, David Davis’s are minus 19, Dominic Raab’s are minus 21, and Esther McVey’s were not polled, presumably on the basis that the recently departed high priestess of universal credit would break their measuring device"

https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...cancelled-vote

Except the British people will not get a choice. They want sovereignty & control but will take what they're given, as usual

Admittedly. Ms May is uniquely uninspiring, and so secretive that no one knows if she has any plans at all. Europe could do without her. We all know that

But if they really do replace her with Johnson, the groan will be louder than when Honecker was replaced by Egon Krenz, because he has zero intellectual clout

I am usually wrong on these matters but I do expect St. Theresa to win that no confidence vote.

That she will be badly wounded by it is beyond dispute.

And she will still have to bring that vote back to Parliament having got no support from the EU as if they were going to help her.

Tin hat on now.

Since Honecker has been mentioned I regard the old GDR as merely a puppet state of the old Soviet Union and it only fell when they would no longer support it.

But the withdrawl agreement virtually makes the UK a puppet state of the EU. There may be brave words that neither side want this backstop to come in to play. Yet no free trade deal can happen in two years. Oh, there is one .It is called The Single Market and Customs Union which I suspect is all that will be on offer. A total impass.

The drawdown of borders has been an important factor for the establishment of a lasting peace throughout the whole European Union. The re-establishment of hard borders does not only have negative economic effects but it can indeed cost human lives.

We're going to get to a second referendum with a question of leave with no deal or remain.

Only one outcome and watch those emojis go.

To add a legalistic problem, an open border is required by the Good Friday Agreement, which is the basis for peace in the North.
