There are some actors I love because they always bring something different/special to every performance, like Tom Wilkinson and Ewan McGregor. Meryl Streep is almost always exceptional as well, and I love Melissa George and Rachel Nichols for their looks and sexy voices.
I avoid Julia Roberts, J-Lo, Tom Cruise, Don Johnson and his progeny. I also go by directors, loving pretty much everything Robert Altman ever did, as well as Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick, though his interpretations of "Lolita" and "The Shining" were awful, and it is just about impossible to find a strong female character in any of his movies. |

Colin Farrell was also very good in "Saving Mr. Banks".

Morgan Freeman seems to steal the scenes in any movie he's in-regardless of whether he's a lead or supporting actor .....there is a small cadre of performers of his ilk who seem to rise above poor scriptwriting, indifferent direction and inept production to deliver memorable performances regardless.....I first saw him in 'Glory'....but there have been quite a few others since then....

Pre-1990ish, I'd go by reviews if I knew nothing about the film, and that it was accessible.... like, in a cinema near me.
The director or writer or story being the magnets. Least of all the 'star' or the 'above-the-title-name' Since then I seem to avoid rather than seek. Anything Milius was connected with, or Cruise/Willis/Stallone etc. Today, if I had a cinema within 20 miles, it would be showing your standard hyped 15-25 year old .... 15-25 IQ..... cr@p. Decent reviews for films in decent papers by decent critics, make me want to live in a City again that has outlets for such films. Otherwise I wait for the DVD. So it's still.... ~ respected critics ~ director / writer / story It's just it takes so much longer now |

This Thread question reminds me of a video of one saw from Bill Duke who was the former performer and now current director he brings up this very issue from the Studio's perspective .

I've never seen John C Reilly in a film I didn't like and I'll watched Steve Coogan in anything because he's just so fcuking funny. Also Diane Morgan.

I rate Tom Hanks very highly as an actor, and would certainly regard any film of his as worth considering. I agree about Colin Farrell's remarkable performance as the tragic, alcoholic father of the author Pamela Travers in Saving Mr Banks; but I also really liked Tom Hank's take on the enigmatic character and personality of Walt Disney in which role he was most convincing. Actually I don't think there was a single bad acting performance in that film - as well as the excellent Emma Thompson performance as the author herself, we a splendid turn from Ruth Wilson as the long-suffering mother and Paul Giamatti was really good as the relentlessly cheerful American chauffeur who Ms Travers gradually figures out and for whose stoicism and absence of self pity she learns to feel big respect.

I recently watched B or C films with Kelly Preston or Sharon Stone, that I'd not have watched with unknown actresses.
Kelly Preston was incredibly gorgeous and Sharon Stone sexy as hell. The film of Sharon Stone was in Italian language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pge-WI0NS_c That's a good way to improve my Italian skills. Kelly Preston film was in Portuguese. "Admiradora Secreta" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90KsDPez28Q Quote:
The same with Kevin Spacey. |
