What makes good porn?

I've often asked myself the question what is the secret of good porn? and, interestingly, what makes vintage porn so good in comparison to modern porn?
I could go on about fake boobs, fake women, tattoos and piercings etc and yes, IMO, they would be some of the major things that make the vast majority of modern porn fall way short of the vintage stuff but I think the secret ingredient of making good porn is this:
First of all you have 'sexy' or 'erotic' while secondly you have 'hard' or 'strong'. A lot of porn seems to be sexy and erotic without being strong and a lot of strong porn doesn't seem to be sexy or erotic.
For example: Do a search in usenet for pictures containing stockings. 99% of those pictures, while showing women looking sexy in stockings, will be soft - cheesy even. Do a search for hard or strong pics and you will see women having sex, using toys and being covered in cum etc, but they won't necessarily be looking sexy. I must add here that 'hard' and 'strong' are very different from 'sexy' or 'erotic' (again IMO) and that could be where modern porn producers are making their big mistake (if they even care). They make porn 'strong' but forget about the 'sexy'.
In the vintage porn of between (say) the mid seventies to the mid eighties, the porn looked 'sexy' and the girls looked 'sexy' while at the same time the acts shown were 'hard'. These, in my humble opinion, are the magic ingredients to why vintage porn is far better than the modern stuff - combining the two. What can be more of a turn-on for a man than seeing a really feminine, natural looking girl, made up and wearing gorgeous nylons and a bit of jewellery having a huge dildo or penis entering her - and looking as if she's enjoying it and wants it?

I would like to add that some modern porn does have the magic ingredients of being both 'strong' and 'sexy' but it isn't commonplace.

All this is, of course, merely conjecture and my own opinion.

I think we've become "desensitized" in a lot of ways, too. The proliferation of porn via cheap web hosting, self made stuff, etc has made porn sort of a commodity.

I think the producers and starlets who really make an effort to stand out are doing some good work, but overall, it's "how much can we make on this little budget".

I think there used to be a lot more imagination, the women looked sexier because they truly were stars. We knew their names, so they played the part. These days, I could watch 50 clips in a row on some sites around the web and not know who ANY of the performers even are!

I think its about pretty much everything, good director is very important, make up, right attitude etc. but its not that much about beauty of the girl, i've seen too many ''average'' looking girls doing HOT AS HELL scenes.

You just pointed out another reason the old school stuff works, average looking woman are included. They may not all be drop dead gorgeous but some had carnal talents and personality that more than made up for their lack of conventional beauty. The variety and types of women were very broad too, they were not all assembly line blonds either.

For me porn shot in real places rather than the modern plastic "studio set" and real looking people rather than sculpted males and silicone women make the movie! Also a story, however cheesy, that leads to sex rather than cutting straight to the action helps too.

I've gotten so Ive gotten pretty desensitized to a lot of porn and I have to look real hard to find things that I like. Which is why I stick with vintage stuff. However, I can still find some of the newer videos that I like. But I have my own criteria that I look for.

Im a big fan of plot. I prefer female/male, one-on-one performances with a story. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Just enough to show the relationship and the seduction of the people onscreen before the scene jumps off. If they can show me in two or three minutes or less that they are: husband/wife, bf/gf, bro/sis, naughty cousins, boss/secretary/temp, rock star/groupie, best friend/unfaithful wife, etc. and what's fueling their intentions, then Im already on the road to being happy. I'll accept threesomes if they're girl/girl/boy. Girl/girl scenes are ok too just not all the time.

It's also important to me that Im watching a scene with two actors who are into it and enjoying the scene even if they are faking it. Also actors need to look as if they would actually be in a real sexual relationship, no matter how brief or casual. I know any two people can have sex in real life but its kind of ridiculous to have a hot girl like Tori Black having sex with a hairy bloat like Ron Jeremy or a pedo like max hardcore and look like she's really wants to be there and enjoying it.

And the director needs to butt out. I don't want to hear him off camera yelling orders or injecting his own humor, or conducting fake interviews with the actresses.

The audio should be the actual audio from the scene not some canned moans added in post production or music that totally drowns out or replaces the original sound. I never understand why it's so hard to make a scene without tons of noises from the camera crew and director.

I understand that today's porn shoots can generate money in many different mediums but if I was a director, I'd absolutely forbid a photographer being onset unless he could do his business without a flash and without all the clicking. It's very distracting and totally takes me out of the mood.

Im a big fan of the "cream pie" and "cream cake" scenes. There's nothing more real than watching a guy blow his load inside a woman. Though there are lots of these movies, it's still hard to set up without all kinds of preparation for the safety of the actors which can take weeks of testing and trust in the actors' activities between testing and filming.
