It seems that Poverty is now 'sexist'.

It may be harder for females born into poverty to get out of it, but males can still starve or freeze to death through it.

But it seems any male death caused by poverty doesn't count.

Can someone tell me what this current thing in universities is about students needing to have their own comfort zones and nobody being allowed to get too close to them?

This phenomenon ties into the previous posts about the lack of free speech and higher education's nanny state environment that's supposed to protect students from real life.

These students have been referred to as "snowflakes". They've been raised with idea that the only thing that matters are their feelings, and that they feel good about themselves regardless.

Then they reach college age and get their first taste of real life and can't cope. I guess nobody told them they might encounter people with differing points of view, different values, different backgrounds, etc. Even worse, they might encounter people who have the nerve to not automatically agree with them, and yes-- they may actually be offended by something.

Safe spaces were born to save these snowflakes from potential discomfort of encountering differing points of view, or seeing/hearing ANYTHING that might make them uncomfortable or upset their delicate sensibilities. Because, after all, their feelings are what matter most of all.

College doesn't last forever (for most) and I wonder how these snowflakes will fair in the real world after graduation.. when the reality hits that outside their mommy, nobody in the real world gives a shit what they think, that their feelings might be hurt, that they might be offended, and that life isn't fair.

At my age, this is just another example of the pussification of America. I recall as a small boy crying to me mum that something "wasn't fair". With a backhand that would make Billie Jean King proud, she gave me a clip up side the head and as I was picking myself up off of the floor she informed me "Life isn't fair. Get used to it".

She was right, and I never forgot it. Another of life's lost lessons.

Not well at all
A good example is my workplace. I run the plant at night and for the company I work, part of the overall business plan for graduate engineers is for them to spend 3 months on Night Shift so they get the feel to know what it's like to have no immediate support or back up at night or weekends. A few have been OK generally, but we did have one who objected to us using colourful language over the radio system, it's a huge place and need them to communicate. I pulled this snowflake to the side and explained that a lot of the blokes there know only factory life and some are hardened men and don't know any other way. He got it in the end, but honestly, that from a late 20's male

The school my grandson goes to held a sports carnival on Sunday that we all went along to. No medals awarded for first, second or third place. Apparently that would make all the other kids feel inadequate. Instead everyone gets a certificate of participation.
I shite you not!
I mean why bother striving. Why don't we all just settle for being mediocre.

I kind of get the point of this but it is handled wrongly.

At my school, we had a "house" system and each house competed on sports day. Every one who finished in any position got points - 1 to 8 or 12 say depending on how they finished and how many in the event. This meant that even the weakest athlete contributed to the team score and made everyone a valuable member.

I remember one bloke who volunteered for the 1,500 metres having had no particular skills in the event. He dogged round in about 6 minutes but earned 2 valuable points, finishing second last. On the basis of that performance my house won the cup - I think the cheer for him was the loudest of the day because of his sheer bloody determination. He was shoulder carried off the track, exhausted but thrilled.
