I think that one of the problems with porn is that like any visualization of fantasy, it removes imagination from the equation.

The reason so many of us who are of a certain age are bored with current state of the porn industry is because the porn industry is simply a reflection of modern culture and we long for a porn industry that reflects an earlier time. As the culture has changed, so has the porn industry.

In days gone by, porn was produced and distributed in very limited channels. Movies were shot on actual film, were generally full-length, and featured actual story lines that offered some level of character development centered around one or two porn stars and a supporting cast. The "hard core" portions, while important, were only part of the overall movie.

Enter the digital age. EVERYTHING changed.

Porn, almost overnight, went from being something that was sold in seedy book and video stores and something grandpa hid in the attic, to something entirely mainstream. Anyone (and everyone) who could afford a cheap digital camera, and/or smart phone, became a "producer" of porn.

And everyone started to have the attention span of gnats. People didn't want to watch a film for 15 minutes to get to the "good parts" (meaning: hardcore parts) and, instead, just like in every other aspect of their lives, they wanted immediate gratification.

And they wanted more and more explicit content.

So the porn industry responded by creating content where the story line IS the sex. And they moved into more hardcore and extreme content.

Unlike some of you, I am not someone who sees these developments as entirely negative. I am a fan of "some" of the more hardcore content, especially the products that are of a higher quality.

As both a participant and supporter of the BDSM lifestyle, the quality of the products in this category have never been higher nor has there ever been more content in a greater number of sub-categories been available.

And with the advent of greater amounts of BDSM porn, the entire lifestyle is far more accepted by modern society. Proof? Wal-Mart now carries an entire line of BDSM-related sex toys and fetish wear.

I pretty much don't d/l anything from after '85. That's when it started drifting away from erotica, (btw - erotica is what this whole site is supposed to be about according to its name... I was on the fringes of the scene in CA in the 70s & early 80s and people were trying to add a little, (& sometimes a lot), of creativity to the sex with varying degrees of success. But even when they failed at that, at least they were trying. Once in a while you see something or someone from later that's cool but then you try to watch a whole movie and you see that the "cool" is usually limited to a scene or 2, with the rest just junk.

I don't think nostalgia has anything to do with boredom with the modern adult industry. The product of the past was something you were willing to have in your home, plot-based, with recognizable stars, and the kind of content you could share with some women. Not anymore...I think that the modern product just stinks, as has been discussed at length on other threads.

The modern industry has painted itself into a corner, through a series of events:

1. The Broadband Revolution of the mid-2000's meant that people could stream decently-sized video on their computers, rather than watching postage-stamp-sized webcams.
2. YouTube made web video easier by bypassing annoying browser plug-ins and using Flash. Other sites jumped on the bandwagon, such as Megerotic, Kim Dotcom's first porn tube site. Seemingly dozens of others come online instantaneously.
3. Meanwhile, the adult industry had gone through other tough times, by flooding the market with low-quality, high-priced DVD's. Fans had had enough, and free porn became available at about the worst possible time.
4. The industry was rife for a slow takeover by the now-wealthy tube site operators. Mindgeek still has a stranglehold on the industry to this day.
5. Fewer people pay for porn, and ad revenue from the tube sites don't make their way to production, so producers have had to make progressively cheaper product, with the same couch in a big white house with plenty of natural light with stars that will be in the business a few months to a couple of years (if they're lucky) directed by the same person holding the camera...BORING! If any beautiful women come by who happen to be good at having hot sex on camera, there's no system to pay them more to hang around, like in the old days...they get flushed just the same, just a little slower.
6. BDSM and other fetish porn comes about not because it's more respectable among the culture, it's because it's one of the few types of content that people will pay for.

In reality, the Jenna Jameson-era was as mainstream as porn ever got. It's not respected nowadays: it's just a disposable commodity for some, loathed by others, not just by religious types, but by many women who see other women as being legitimately abused by the industry. If you don't think a Harris vice-presidency won't bring down a Hell on the adult industry that will make the protests of the 1970's and the controversies of the 1980's look like a party, you're not paying attention.

And once you started getting to take of girl's clothes on your own, THAT'S what was actually underneath. It turned out that the Sears catalog was an accurate depiction... All those bras, girdles, garter belts, etc. Some of those scenes in Mad Men with Don Draper's wife half dressed and showing nothing, (or less than), you can see at any beach or public pool, were some of the sexiest things I've even seen on a TV that's seen a fair share of erotic stuff. Why? Because that's what the girls wore when I was taking their clothes off and that was sublime.

It's like anything, if you watch something or indulge in something too much you get a bit jaded by it, or blasé about it, so you need a break from it (maybe a week or two – a month even) to refresh yourself.

Plus, porn (coupled with masturbation) can never replace “the real thing” no matter how good it may be, but unfortunately for many people the real thing is not so easy to come by, especially as you age, so there’s often little alternative.

As it happens, I usually masturbate while looking at "mainstream" stuff anyway, parts of certain movies and TV shows usually, I only look at porn or any kind of erotica, probably 10 to 20% of the time.

Like a lot of people here it seems, I like the old-stuff too when it comes to porn, but even that becomes tedious when you watch it too much. Like I said, you need a good break from it now and again.
