I recently saw an article about how badly Americans overestimate the number of Muslims in this country. Those polled believe on average that there are 54 million Muslims here, roughly 17% of the population. In fact, there are 3.3 million Muslims of all ages, a little over 1% of the population. Furthermore, Muslims are divided between Sunni and Shia with traces of Sufi and other sects. We have seen that when peoples from the Middle East and India are attacked by the fearful, most Americans do not understand that most immigrants from India are Hindus, but the turban wearing Sikhs profess a faith that is neither Hinduism or Islam. How many are aware that Iranians and those from southeastern Iraq are generally Shiites, while most of the rest of the Muslim world is Sunni? Of course, our culturally and geographically ignorant folks are also unaware of the ethnic divides between the Arabs, Kurds, Iranians, and Turks.

But we are not alone in our ignorance. It is quite obvious that Islamic terrorists have no idea that the Coptic Christians of Egypt went their own way in the 5th century, the Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics split in the 11th century, the Protestants began divorcing themselves from papal authority in the 16th century and have splintered into myriad sects thereafter.

The release reportedly came after talks with the government, though few details are confirmed.
