Sites that host pirated software and movies have been blocked by UK service providers for a few years now, it has been 100% successful, hasn't it?

What's been successful is seizing domains. That won't happen outside the UK, but for UK sites, who knows? It would be foolish to think that age verification will be the final assault on porn. When it doesn't work they will try something more draconian. Outlawing vpn use (they're doing it in Russia) seems a logical step for a government that wants to ban all forms of encryption (that they can't decrypt). But they will want to use the 'protecting the children' excuse so expect that to come in a couple of years when they can say that age verification hasn't worked.

Agreed, so in reality the UK government legislation will only have an impact so the least IT savvy.

Easier said than done. We are talking UK here. You know, the country that has successfully banned the use of mobile phones whilst driving, and smoking in commercial vehicles including taxi's.

They may try to ban VPN's, but how will they enforce it? And in the (very) unlikely event that they did impose a ban and it was successful, how long would it be before a viable alternative circumvented the legislation?

I hope you're right. I just think they're trying to take control of the internet the way they've wanted to since it came into existence. All the big party's seem to want this, and it's all in the name of 'protecting children' and 'stopping online harassment and abuse' (of women). It's bullshit. We know it and they know it. I don't want the government to have control of what I do and don't see online - they're second rate people doing a third rate job. Get out of our private lives you bunch of hypocritical bastards!

When the internet came along we were already the most regressive backward nation - practically on earth - with regards to porn. Things were just starting to loosen and then the horse bolted with the internet. Now they want to turn back the clock. Fisting and urine illegal? Why?! I will never ever understand UK laws regarding sex / sexuality, they seem at once to ignore basic biology, the freedom of the individual to do what they want, and they (at least historically) have never achieved whatever it is they were purported to do.
