Sex Ed When You Were A Teenager
I would like to start a thread about sex education when you were a teenager.
I had a terrible disadvantage by the time I was 12 and hit puberty. I was overweight, from a less athletic and more nerdy family, almost none of whom worked out, dieted, played sports, or cared about their looks. So to be put in a jock-dominated middle school (then jock-dominated high school) was an obvious example of "What the f**k were my parents, or God, even thinking?!" Even though I eventually learned some diet, workouts, fashion, and hairstyles, it really should have started at home before age twelve. To make matters worse, most of us hit puberty by 12, but the school district didn't start sex education until many of us were 15, as high school freshmen. So by my first week of high school, two guys I knew had herpes, and four girls were pregnant, including the girl who sat next to me in health class where we did sex ed. It grossed me out to the possibilities of high school sex, even though people should be allowed to date and experiment in high school if they choose to. I only ever got to second base with a model-quality girl at age sixteen, then at seventeen had the opportunity to sleep with a skanky girl who I really didn't like anymore after our breakup on New Year's Eve 1993 (she wanted to get back with me in 1994, but I didn't like her romantically or sexually anymore, and chose to leave her by 1995). So I didn't get the action I wanted or deserved in high school, but it brought me closer to the ideal woman I am really looking for, if I ever decide to marry in my forties. What was the sex education and/or dating culture like for you as a teenager? I am especially looking to hear from guys who didn't grow up in a conservative, sexist, irrational place like Cincinnati, and/or guys who grew up in Europe or Canada where people are less sexually prudish and narrow-minded in general? Please respond to this thread at your next convenience. |

I suppose we had some back in the '70s but I honestly can't remember anything. If there was anything it didn't get much beyond a bit of biology. Everybody learned from each other. I can only remember one girl getting pregnant and she had a terrible time from the stigma.

I remember having sex education in school for the first time when i was around age 11 (so late 70ies in Belgium, Europe) and for what i remember it was pretty abstract and biological, and not much of it. I didn't care much about it either, as i was pre-puberty at the time.
It was in ethics class (it was called 'morality' or 'moral' - the class where the non religious kids were when the others were having catholic class. We were with 7 while about the rest of our class (about 20) were in Catholic class, more than one kid told me they chose that class because of the presents they were gonna get for their communion... so much for honest believing i thought, but i digress) One weird detail i remember was my teacher saying that spermatozoids were black. A few years later when i had my first orgasm i saw white goo and i was feeling surprised, and a little bit betrayed :P |

I went to primary school in the Netherlands in the 70s. I recall getting explained to me the rudimentaries of what takes place during sex and how conception works.
We emigrated to New Zealand when I was 15, went to school and received the same sort of lessons. Too late for some by then. |

Non existent at my Yorkshire Grammar School. There was, however, a very obliging young girl at the local comprehensive who seemed very willing to help educate many of us by practical lessons.

Sex education? I went to Catholic schools for 12 years. And truth to tell, the kids in my neighborhood weren't overtly sexual.
