Left to themselves, Bovis, Persimmon and Barrett Houses would have covered every green field in the Sorth East with identikit housing estates many years ago. Building outwards would ruin the countryside we still have remaining. It isn't so much the height of the buildings as the denseness, the absence of greenery which adds to the suntrap effect.

The Victorians left us a really valuable legacy when they planted avenues of trees along most streets and roads in London. They create shade and cool the pavements underneath them and every London plane tree removes at least one and half tons of aerial particulate pollution every year merely from the dust and crap which stick to their leaves. If we did more to encourage plant cultivation our city would be both cleaner and cooler.

So I took my iPhone into my local phone repair shop today . Discussed comparative religion with the Gyppo owner with whom I'm on good terms. He fixed the phone for a tenner , gave me this excellent phone cover and has promised me a free copy of the Koran in both English and Arabic.

Now you don't get that sort of service from Apple.
