My favorite episode in the series which featured Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg was "The House That Jack Built" where Emma Peel was stuck in a house that was actually a mechanical contraption that trapped anyone who had the misfortune of entering it, but Emma's intelligence allowed her to conquer the secret of the house and escape.

Who could match Joanna Lumley for Fighting Skill, that Snoot Daggers Look, that Posh Plummy Voice, her physical strength, athleticism, her sleek challenging sexiness and those famed Purdey Legs ? (which were ranked in A Top 10 Poll with such as Gabriela Sabatini.) Purdey did say to Gambit 'None are as good as me.'

Joanna Lumley had that 'Come and test me if you dare !' look that made her irresistible to men and women alike, particularly as Avenger Purdey . A huge hit with women in The Netherlands who copied her Purdey bob hairstyle and even lined up a rather fit Dutch singer and actress, Adele Bloemendaal, for a little boot to boot action with our stunning Avenger girl when she visited The Netherlands in 1977 !

Don't Lance Your Boil On My Parade - Johnny Carson
Big fan of the Emma Peel era Avengers, except for the bit that befuddled me. Several of the plots implied that the writers had run out of ideas. Is it me, or am I mistaking their experimentalism for implausibility? Were they intentionally fusing drama and farce (in ways that spoiled both)? I've also wondered if this was a symptom of too few writers, too over-worked due to budget constraints?
Concluding: When the Avengers were good, they were great. And when they were not, Emma Peel was still worth the price of admission. |

We are spoilt in the UK; on Freeview True Entertainment show The Avengers on a constant loop in the evenings - goes from start to finish and back again. ITV4 are showing the Diana Rigg period colour episodes. The latter is my favourite period.
