Thank you for the input buttsie. It's much appreciated, but sadly, that ain't what I'm looking for my friend.
I'm an old school MOFO, and want the XP interface back (as do many others).
That OS was like a comfortable, old pair of jeans that I knew inside, and out. I don't know my ass from my elbow with Win10. I'm learning, and my new box is a speedy bitch, but it's still a pain in the ass. I just want to have the option of opening an individual folder, without the explorer drop down tree on the left.

And......I want my My Computer shortcut back on the desktop.

I know, I know.....wish in one hand, shit in the other, and see which piles up first.

What is the story behind Classic Shell?
The project started back in 2008 as a small utility to replace the copy UI for Vista. In 2009 a friend switched from XP to Vista and complained that the Up button was missing. That was the second feature that was implemented. Later in October 2009 I switched to Windows 7 and was very disappointed that the classic start menu was gone, so I went to make my own. After the start menu was done I decided to make this project public and added it to Source Forge. The rest is history.


It is not a "make my computer look exactly like Windows XP". It only brings back few select features from the XP days, not everything. You are not going to find the puppy search here

Thanks again my man. I've already got it tweaked so I can go directly to my goods through a desktop icon with my name, but it just isn't the same, and I have no interest in installing any third party software. I'm one of those untrusting bastards. I guess I'll have to learn to love the 10.

You don't have to. There are other OSes around. While I'm willing to admit personal taste plays a role, and therefore they aren't necessarily better, you may find one of them better.

Windows, any version, will always be something I am forced to endure at work. At home, it's a different story and Gates' monstrosity doesn't get a look in.

I did a rebuild on my win8 laptop recently and it went into update mode shortly after.
100 updates later into went into failed update, undoing update mode.
It spent 3 days doing this when I finally got the shits with it.
I tried everything to recover it and finally tossed it into the trash.
I'm now running a Lenovo all in one PC and am a very happy camper.
These Lenovo AIO are aweseome, 8gb ram, 1TB HD, big screen, small footprint on the desktop.

I got the update to install, but now my backup program (Comodo, on this particular machine) can't figure out exactly where the partitions are.

If it helps I have a friend who works in IT and is ultra conservative about what he installs, but he swears by Classic Shell.

Every Windows 10 in-place Upgrade is a SEVERE Security risk

This is a big issue and it has been there for a long time. Just a month ago I finally got verification that the Microsoft Product Groups not only know about this but that they have begun working on a fix. As I want to be known as a white hat I had to wait for this to happen before I blog this.
There is a small but CRAZY bug in the way the "Feature Update" (previously known as "Upgrade") is installed.

The installation of a new build is done by reimaging the machine and the image installed by a small version of Windows called Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment).

This has a feature for troubleshooting that allows you to press SHIFT+F10 to get a Command Prompt.

This sadly allows for access to the hard disk as during the upgrade Microsoft disables BitLocker. I demonstrate this in the following video.
This would take place when you take the following update paths:

• Windows 10 RTM --> 1511 or 1607 release (November Update or Anniversary Update)
• Any build to a newer Insider Build (up to end of October 2016 at least)

The real issue here is the Elevation of Privilege that takes a non-admin to SYSTEM (the root of Windows) even on a BitLocker (Microsoft's hard disk encryption) protected machine.
And of course that this doesn't require any external hardware or additional software.
It's just a crazy bug I would say Windows 10 RTM --> 1511 or 1607 release (November
Update or Anniversary Update)

My conclusion to this:
- do not leave your computer alone while your upgrades are processing;
- avoid downloading the upgrades as long as you can;
- have backups kept current;
- have a godd anti-virus and currently upgraded;
- cross your fingers.

I am afraid to apply these updates, no telling what will happen. I run 8.1.

Could I get some advice from you knowledgeable folks? Is it ok to update?
Wasn't there a list somewhere saying what updates to avoid?
