Default Re: 'Why atheism would be not a belief?' - Here's why

Let me clarify this misunderstanding & explain why atheism isn't a belief here. (N.B. The responses are from xyzde69 to CalumH's original post)

xyzde69 True, they are not always similar concepts, but they can. Nonsensical would be not at all similar concepts like you wrote.... but they can be similar concepts.
Sometimes if the context was different but the context here is claims about a god & atheism is not believing claims a god exists isn't it? That's the opposite of a belief, just as health isn't a disease but the opposite of a disease.

But I agree with you that if I can't believe in a thing, it doesn't mean that I believe in nothing.
Exactly!

Well 'only' is a loaded term. Some words have content e.g. 'Disease' or 'Theism' & other words indicate a lack of that content e.g. 'Health' or 'Atheism' yeah?

I would bet that the term 'Atheist' was created for the same reason the term 'Infidel' was created: for believers to demonize non-believers. We don't actually need a term for what people don't believe do we? We just need a term which has content: what people do believe.

No. An atheist may say anything just as a person who doesn't believe in flying saucers might say anything but the one thing you can guarantee is that they won't say is 'I believe god claims.' As an unbeliever myself my (personal) answer to the question 'What do you believe?' is 'Demonstrable evidence.' Others may have different answers - you cannot generalize on this issue any more than you can generalize about what people who don't believe flying saucer claims happen to believe.

Isn't it?
No definitely not. Is health a disease or no disease? Is baldness a hairstyle or no hairstyle? They are the absence of such things & so it is with atheism: a lack of belief in claims made about the existence of gods.

I'm a Christian apostate and atheist from the time I reached the age of reason (early 20's for me), mainly due to the complete absence of any compelling evidence whatsoever, but also for the problem of suffering in the world. Call me arrogant, but if gods and the afterlife do exist, I've got a few choice words ready for him/her/it/them when my time comes.

I see the term 'atheist' being misused all the time. I'd like to clarify that by identifying as an atheist one isn't claiming there are no gods. All it means is they don't believe in them. There are 'strong' atheists who go so far as to claim gods aren't real, but I wonder what evidence they are basing that on. Aren't strong atheists in the same boat as theists in that regard?

Thanks for this thread. I haven't read it all yet, so sorry if I said something that's been discussed to death already. There aren't many people that I know in my neck of the woods (bible belt USA) with whom I can have calm and intelligent conversations on this subject.

I come across this on a porn form...
For me...I trust in a Goddess, rather do that then just believe in a almighty.
I have seen perfection, you wanna compare,...a vision of Aphrodite, if Gods and Goddesses exist
This bullshit about a blond blue eyed, what is imagined for a Goddess, way wrong.
Look at Sabrina West aka Sara Lynn, she is perfect in a mystic way

Interesting thread.

Religion. I really don't get what it actually is, since I'm not religious at all. Never had any contanct with religion outside of being a wedding guest. - Religion is such a distant concept for me, it's all so vague and silly. - But then to other people it's serious business. And I really don't grasp why.

All I can come up with to define religion: It's like a hobby for other people.

Yes, I look at religious people and the many different religions in the world like they are fans of different sport teams. If you're like me who has no interest in sport at all, I couldn't care less when or where the games are, who is playing against who and who wins... because it doesn't really matter to me.
