You say potato we say spud, you say potato chips, we say crisps. It is only when you get to french fries or pomme frites that it gets really confusing I often wonder where 16yr old American girls get their ideas about us from - surely not just from people like David Bowie, The Beatles or Harry Potter? I do find it mildly amusing though that Americans say they can't understand our culture, yet we are supposed to know what the hell they rap about in songs and talking jive or street language in television series. Who was it that said "we are two great nations separated by a common language"? It's just US who speak it like natives, better than what Americans can.

Really surprised to read that Ronnie Corbett was suffering symptoms of Motor Neurone Disease and perhaps his death was more a blessing than ending up in a wheelchair a shadow of his former self. At least now he will be at rest and who knows maybe alongside his old partner Ronnie Barker will host another Two Ronnies show comeback-heavenly!

I suppose the local "officials" jacked them up for some permit money, now that you mention it.

I don't know. it's just not the same without the incessant nagging.

An American in England asks a local where the elevator is.
The Englishmen gives him directions, and points out that here, it's called a "lift.". The American says "It's called an elevator, after all, it was invented in America, you know.", the Englishman responds "That may be, but the language was invented here."

But can you imagine how unfunny this scene would be using the word lift rather than elevate

Hundreds Line Up in SD to Order $35,000 Tesla

Quote:
Hunter Kupka of Temecula camped out at 5 a.m. Wednesday to get the first place in line when the Tesla store opened at 10 a.m. Thursday.
"I've been here approximately 30 hours," the groggy college student told the Union-Tribune after he finished paying for two deposits. "It's something new, something cool, something to do. I didn't have class yesterday or today. It's only a couple of grand (for the two deposits) and it's fully refundable."
I'm here to get a $35,000 Tesla because I can't afford the S," said Phyllis Ingram of La Jolla, who was about halfway through Thursday morning's line. "I got here at 9:45. I thought I'd be in the front."
While the $35,000 is Model 3's listed price, high-tech features such as auto-pilot can quickly jump the price into the $50,000-$60,000 range.
Qualified buyers could receive up to $10,000 in federal and state sales incentives, rebates or tax breaks.
"This is the moment of the Model T as far as electric vehicle revolution is concerned," said Tony Williams of San Diego, who was one of the early birds in line Thursday morning and already owns a Model S. "This is when the mass market realizes they can actually drive a full-featured electric car for a reasonable price that competes on par with any gasoline car they have."

Speaking of language, did you know that Microwave Oven in Welsh (Gaelic, not the Irish or Scottish Gaelic if you're interested) is Poppity ping. I'm not lying, perhaps some of our Welsh member can confirm this.
