Another boring Rollover again this weekend. Pointless doing the lottery until the 5th rollover as it is never won before that nowadays.

However, notice the prizewinning structure for Wednesdays draw.

3 numbers win £25
4 numbers win £51
5 numbers win £15

If that does not make you want to stop doing the lottery nothing will.

I drive a Ford Mondeo Mark Two, first registered in 1998. In the USA the same motor vehicle was sold as the Ford Contour or the Mercury Mistique: it sold like bacon sandwiches at a Bar Mitzvah. And in fact, mine is not a particularly good example, having been abused worse than Little Orphan Annie. I bought it when it was six years old for £500. Even back then, £500 was a very low price. It had been my boss's company car, so I knew it was dealer-serviced and mechanically very sound, and it has been pretty solid for reliability; which was/is my top priority. But the dealer (Dagenham Motors) would only offer £500 in trade in because the car was "cosmetically challenged". His wife had whacked the front passenger side door against a concrete bollard. Both of then had employed the front and rear bumpers and solid objects as a substitute for brakes. He had carried a large tin of emulsion paint on the back seat without securing the lid. You get the idea.

Since then, all I have done is repair mechanical fault, get some welding done to pass the MOT, and let nature do the rest.

I stopped doing the Lotto when it went up to 59 numbers however the figures above seem to be an anomaly
Look at Saturdays draw
55 tickets got 5 numbers - each one won £1896.

On the Wednesday draw 4082 tickets got 5 numbers -

The previous Wednesday 36 winners got £1729 each.

It's either a misprint or they are very popular numbers. The more winners the lower the share, when you get several birthday numbers between 1 & 31 there are bound to be more winners and lots of disappointed punters.

It's not a misprint, it's because they chose numbers divisible by 7, which is a lucky number for many (well not any more)

People are complaining it's not fair, don't they understand it's a lottery!
This is not a game of skill or fairness. The only rational decision due to poor odds on winning anything has always been not to play at all and gamble on something else.

You can bet that many of these 'winners' will still play and still choose the same 'lucky numbers'

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

For me this is noticeable as it is the first big superhero film I have personally chosen not to see on the opening day for years.
I am a big Marvel comics fan but I did see Green Lantern on its release date and enjoyed it so it's not just a Marvel v DC bias.

DC have a great TV presence now with Gotham, Arrow and The Flash, I'll skip aside Legends of Tomorrow

As it is also a bank holiday and the film is 12A any screening will no doubt be full of coke drinking, popcorn rustling "who's that?" asking rugrats, I'd sooner take on Lex Luthor and Doomsday myself

I'll leave it for a few weeks.

Agreed! I never ever go to see big releases in the first few weeks or during school holidays precisely because they're not just full of noisy kids - who at least have the excuse that they're kids - but gormless teenagers and, worst of all, adult gobshites who buy huge trays and bags of smelly noisy junk food, kick the backs of seats, hold inane conversations in full voice and, the worst two sins of all, make phonecalls on their smartphones AND spend half the time lighting up the cinema by spending half their time on facebook, twitter, snapchat and the other social inanity sites.

What stuns me is that these people, like me, have spent £20 on a ticket but they prefer to throw their money away doing something they could do after the film has ended.

I detested Margaret Thatcher and I have not deviated from this merely because she is now pushing up the daisies. But not everything she ever did or said was wrong. The national lottery was proposed to her in the mid 1980s as a really clever wheeze to tax the people without appearing to do so. The next day she handed the proposal document back to the minister who had advocated it. She had taken a think black marker pen and written on the the cover page.

Thing is, she was a Methodist and came from generations of Methodists. She wasn't strict in her beliefs, for example I am pretty sure she drank alcohol; after all, she was married to Dennis. But she disliked gambling and recognised it as a dangerous vice. I strongly suspect that bookmakers would still be legally banned from advertising and that local authorities which opposed planning applications for the seventh betting shop in less than a third of a mile on the high street would be being supported by central government if La Thatcher were still in charge. She was right about the national lottery. It started a trend in which people are now encouraged to gamble. Under New Labour Tessa Jowell passed the 2005 Gambling Act which encouraged this activity at an official level so the government could increase tax revenue; and she also diverted national lottery proceeds to fund activities which are supposed to be paid for out of taxation, which is tantamount to admitting it is an official Mafia numbers racket run on behalf of the government.

IMHO everyone should have a vice. I have several, of which my favourites are talking shit about politics on VEF, banning people and eating sweets. Some vices are positively evil though, and need to be criminalised. Many vices are merely naughty and should be left alone for people to enjoy peacefully. But no one should be encouraged in their vices. Neither should a vice be advertised. I hate it that betting shops are allowed to advertise and that the national lottery is promoted on TV. Gambling can be great fun; I do go to the races very occasionally and always have a flutter then. Horse racing is dull as Hell until you put money on, when suddenly it gets very interesting. But I take with me the exact sum of money I intend to lose and I never deviate from this budget. Note the phrase "intend to lose." BTW: this is how I approach gambling. It is not an activity which make money, except for the bookmakers or the lottery; and that is why I would ban advertising for it, because it adds no value, renders no service and merely takes money from people in return for nothing. How can you honestly advertise gambling as worth the money it costs?
