Franz Schmidt (22 December 1874 -- 11 February 1939) was an Austrian composer, cellist and pianist.

Work: Symphony No.1 in E-major (1899) scored for Piccolo, 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes (English Horn), 2 Clarinets, 3 Bassoons (3rd also Contrabassoon), 4 Horns, 3 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani, Strings.

Mov.I: Sehr langsam - Sehr lebhaft
Mov.II: Langsam
Mov.III: Schnell und leicht
Mov.IV: Lebhaft, doch nicht zu schnell

Orchestra: Malmö Symphony Orchestra

Conductor: Vassily Sinaisky

Written in 1896 at age 22. The scherzo of this precociously accomplished symphony (which shows a mature absorption of Bruckner and Richard Strauss) is especially noteworthy, while Schmidt demonstrates his contrapuntal skills in the Finale.

Peter Josef von Lindpaintner was a German composer during the Classical period. He was not well known. He mostly composed romantic operas, but also wrote some instrumental music. The disc I have has two of his sinfonia concertante. I believe I explained what this is before, but as a refresher a sinfonia concertante combines elements of a concerto and a symphony. The difference between a regular concerto is that soloists are separate from the orchestra, but in a sinfonia concertante, the soloists play along with the orechestra after their solo performance.
