For me his best two films , in fact the only two films he made that bare repeat viewing were Dr Strangeglove and Being there. The latter in my opinion the better of the two . Just a shame idiotic Hal Ashby felt it sensible to show a blooper reel straight after the end of the film as that move didn`t only completely ruin the vibe of the final reel it took away any chance Sellers had of winning a deserved Oscar
A fact the man himself knew only too well the minute he saw the finished film . Leading him to go so far as to petition the producers and production company itself and offer to pay for the removal of that inane unnecessary addition

Great actor, wonderfully comedic, but as far as people who knew him, a bit barking.

As a kid I only knew him from the Pink Panther films, films that I thought were rubbish. I really didn't rate him at all, Inspector Clouseau just annoyed the hell outta me.
Then I discovered The Goons, and came to realise just what a comic genius the man was. He and Spike Milligan were just superb together - Henry Crun and Minnie Bannister, Hercules Grytpype-Thynne and Count Moriarty and especially Bluebottle and Eccles. Not to mention the immortal Major Dennis Bloodnok. My opinion of the Pink Panther films are still the same, but my opinion of Peter Sellers was forever changed by the sheer awsome sauce that was The Goon Show. |

That happened when Milligan was in the grip of a mental breakdown and the weapon involved was a potato peeler.Sellers in an uncharacteristic moment of decency refused to reveal the precise details.

Soon as I saw the thread I thought of "Being There" , a serious turn @ the end of his career, his pinnacle as an actor. The Ladykillers too, he was just one of several famous faces in that film but it's priceless.
I remember "Tom thumb" in which Sellers plays Terry Thomas's idiot sidekick, a pair of villanous swine, & the scene were they are counting their stolen money is just too much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jwh_N-RK3c He once did a really wierd B&W thing with Ringo Starr- the magic christian (??) spooked me as a kid. I heard a story about the first time that Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers met....
They were living in the same mansion block and someone told sellers about this 'strange' guy who lived on the other side of the block. Picture it... 3 o'clock in the morning and there is a knock on Spike Milligans door, he reluctantly answers it to be confronted by a completely naked Peter Sellers ! Sellers is totally naked apart from a bowler hat and an umbrella and he simply asks : " I wonder if you could recommend a good tailor?" 3 o'clock in the morning!! That was supposedly the start of their friendship. It may not be true, but that is what I heard and it sounds quite probable!

I spotted this thread moments after typing a few words into the Goons thread, so I'll just repeat what I said there: the Arena programme about him that tells his story using cine film he shot himself is absolutely compelling. it came out a few years ago on DVD.
He certainly was a complicated man. Very much enjoyed the Geoffrey Rush film from '04 or so. |

Loved him in the role of Hoffman in the film of the same name - bitter, disgruntled middle-aged man blackmails his typist Miss Smith, played by the delectable Sinead Cusack, into spending a week in his apartment. She fears a fate worse than death but Hoffman is cleverer than that - he wants her to fall in love with him.
