I'd like to ask anyone out there who is specifically Russian the following question:
What did people think of Ronald Reagan when he was President? I may have seen in a YouTube video that the Soviet leadership thought he would push the button... and distinctly recall a propaganda poster of him dressed like a cowboy! |

I think that the reason Americans chose him in elections (1980 & 1984) is that he was perceived as a strong, resolute, anti-communist who also pledged to restore the economy.
But I think that Republicans must have chosen him because he was an actor! During the early '80s, when Andropov and Chernenko (spelling?) were running the USSR, he used his rhetoric to basically scare the shit out of them and convince them he would be willing to push the button. At the same time, some of the things he was doing (like aiding the mujahideen in Afghanistan and pursuing Able Archer '83) exposed that the USSR was in some ways weaker than people thought at the time. Then in the later '80s, when Mikhail Gorbachev was in power, he reversed his tactics and chose to negotiate arms reductions and diplomatic solutions. I suggest the '80s documentaries by CNN that were on U.S. television, including "Tear Down This Wall", for a perspective on the last decade of the Cold War that is more liberal due to the network's views, but still respectful of Reagan's political abilities (remember that most Americans, even Democrats, had a positive view of him in the '80s)... I will agree that his remark about "We begin bombing [Russia] in five minutes" was very irresponsible, but so was the USSR appointing Communists in place of qualified nuclear scientists at Chernobyl. So I guess that America and Russia are about even. |

It was like that at the time of Reagan, and during Putin and Trump will be. Reagan? What can I say. Reaganomics, joked a lot, sometimes even funny. Cowboy? It is a hint at his acting past. No one in the USSR believed in a nuclear war. In those days (the late 80's), the Soviet people was more than what was happening in his own country. I better like Jimmy Carter. And his epic struggle with the "predatory rabbit" ...=D Last edited by Licht; April 1st, 2017 at 11:06 AM.. |
