The Meg (2018)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4779682/ Being a long time fan of the Meg novels by Steve Alten this is one film I have been long hoping would be made. Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is a deep sea salvage expert, five years ago whilst attempting a rescue from a stranded submarine on the ocean floor in the depths of the Pacific the rescue is interrupted by something attacking the sub. Having to make a quick decision he has to leave two of his crew behind although he does rescue many of the crew of the submarine. His claim the sub was being attacked by something large was rejected and he is tainted by accusations of cowardice from one of the survivors. Five years later and 200 miles off the coast of China an underwater research facility has been set up by a plain speaking billionaire, they are investigating a claim that what they believe is the bottom of the Mariana Trench is merely a cloud covering a far deeper sea, they send a submersible down piloted by Taylor's ex wife and they discover a hidden world beneath the cloud layer but as pretty as it looks something deadly is lurking there and is seeking new prey A 100% full on action movie laced with black humour and very enjoyable There are five Meg books to date and a 6th as of yet only available in e-book format. Now I just need someone to film Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsLk0NPRFAc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Mrfh6dZOFc

I must admit for a one off action movie he fits the bill well enough but then they changed his background story enough to shoehorn him in. It's played for fun though throughout especially the scenes with Rainn Wilson as the billionaire Morris. Anything with killer sharks in is on my watch list

Back on dry land and a few hundred years ago
The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066849/ 16th century England (according to the Making of) and after the discovery of a strange fur covered skeleton by a ploughman a group of the village children led by wild child Angel Blake (Linda Hayden) are slowly turning into devil worshippers. The Judge (Patrick Wymark) is out to defeat them. A classic horror film with a few decent nude scenes that adds to its appeal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RMySPyhMUY full movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YndZMkyJVjo

Don't forget the other BBC offering about a nuclear strike-The War Game, now that was harrowing too.

Ernest and Celestine. A marvellously illustrated French movie about an evil (really just misunderstood) bear with a heart of gold and a orphaned mouse. I thought it was going to be soppy, but it hits just the right notes.

"The Relic" [1997]
One plot point will tell you why this is a stupid movie. The Mayor and his entire party of well heeled friends are "trapped" in the Museum, because somehow the Chicago Police Department can't get through a door. And so they hit on the genius plan "lets wade through half submerged tunnels in the basement with a monster" as their "plan". You know what my plan would be? "Open the fucking door". This movie is from 1997, but somehow feels ten years earlier. Its filmed on location in Chicago, so its got a bit of a Ferris Bueller/Risky Business vibe (I think the Illinois Film Commission was handing out money in the 80s and 90s, they don't anymore, and you don't see many big budget films shot there any more). This has a promising premise "the anthropologist brought something bad back from the jungle", but its just terrible. For one thing, its a movie without a "star"-- despite a lot of well known actors. Penelope Ann Miller, James Whitmore, Tom Sizemore, Linda Hunt, and more, but they're all essentially written as supporting actors. Lotta cliche'd characters-- the arrogant scientist, the hard boiled detective, the imperious mayor, some rich assholes. There's some feeble attempt created character backstory, but its like they decided "why bother". Oh, yeah, and the wisecracking lesbian coroner . . . she's great. And one really badly made practical monster; the only thing worse than the practical fx are the digital fx, which look a bit like "Ghost Rider." Boy is it terrible, they film it in really dark scenes, 'cuz it looks like nothing. There's an insultingly stupid bit of pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo-- you can get that they were going for a little of the buzz that came from gene sequencing, but its painfully stupid. I hate this movie more because I'd so much like it to be better. But this monster "Kathoga" (sounds like "Cthulhu" + "Thug") kinda wants to be a little bit like "The Thing" or "The Fly", but its just stupid. Deepsepia gives it one murderous hormonal jungle fungus out five, and that's more pity than deserved . . . Last edited by deepsepia; August 11th, 2018 at 02:06 AM.. |
