2016- I didnt vote because of the whole non-nude thing but was REALLY hoping for Kayla Rae Reid or Ana Cheri. Miss Washington just didnt seemed more like a nod/publicity pick for the “Black Lives Matter” movement ( as bubba420 mentions above me). That just left a whole bitter taste...
I disagree about Eugena Washington being a nod or publicity pick for the Black Lives Matter movement. From my point of view, Eugena Washington was certainly a publicity pick but not for BLM, Eugena was selected because she is a dark skinned, African American woman and this would have been a good way for Playboy to promote themselves as they were going into their new, non-nude era. I saw this as them attempting to move away from the classic Playboy image of the busty, blonde girl next door as they moved into this, short lived, new era.

Black Playmates are certainly not as rare as they used to be, there have been 11 selected so far this decade alone but many of them are mixed race and/or lighter skinned and racially ambiguous, Eugena being darker skinned, less racially ambiguous, as well as a notable fashion model made her a perfect choice for Playboy for to use to promote their new era.

I think if Playboy would have promoted Eugena as the Black Lives Matter Playmate, either openly or indirectly, they would have drawn the ire of many groups. Playboy's Black audience is too small for those issues to matter and they would have certainly pissed off and alienated their traditional fanbase, as well as probably draw sharp criticism from Black Twitter.

I haven't looked at every year about which I would have an opinion, but it's astonishing not just how rarely I agreed with the pick, but how frequently I had the winner in the bottom four or dead last.

I looked from 1959 through 1994 and agreed with only one winner, June Cochran in 1962.

There's another set of years where although I disagreed with the pick, I had no problem with it:
1970 I'm ok with Sharon Clark though I would have gone with Barbara Hillary.
1974 Ok with Marilyn Lange, I would have gone with Francine Parks or Sandy Johnson.
1979 Ok with Dorothy Stratten, I would have gone with Candy Loving or Vicky McCarty.
1983 Ok with Barbara Edwards, I would have gone with Alana Soares or Carina Persson.
1991 Ok with Corinna Harney, I would have gone with Saskia Linsen.

All told, only eight of the winners in that span were in my top four. Amazingly, I had the winner dead last nine times. Four more I had 11th. 17 winners were in my bottom four for their years.

1985 is otherwise known as, "The Year of Darkness." Not only did my favorite of all time Joan Bennett not win, nor did Devin DeVasquez, who would have been my pick just about any other year, but I had Kathy Shower last.

Speaking of which, am I just imagining it, but were there letters to the editor for her PMOY issue that actually said they had Shower last? I swear I remember that because it was the only time I could recall them publishing letters that said anything negative about a playmate or PMOY. I thought, "Damn, if they are doing that they must have got a lot of mail disagreeing with the pick."

Yes! That's exactly what I remembered. Thanks for confirming that my mind hasn't completely gone away. Again, just think of what the possible motivation was for them to publish that letter. It's so out of character for the magazine.

Wow, I agree with all three of those. Shannon Long losing to Conrad was particularly egregious, but, well, you know.

1981 Kelly Tough over Terri Welles. Nothing against Ms. Welles, mind you, but back then I knew Kelly would forever be my favorite Playmate of all time and that still holds true. I only wish she would have been the POTY.

But she has a great consolation prize from me. GOAT.
