The list was chosen by a raft of professional comedians from both the UK and the US, hence the title of Comedian's Comedian... The intention being to produce a qualified list, chosen by those who should be best placed to judge.

Out of their top 5 I can appreciate and accept why 4 of them appear but I've personally never found Woody Allen funny at all... or Robin Williams or Steve Martin or Harry Hill or Peter Kay...

Channel 4 did also carry out a similar best stand up comedian poll which was voted for by members of the public and in which Billy Connolly came out on top.

Vanity Fair Magazine did something similar recently asking prominent "artists" (mostly New York gallery favorites)to name the "6 greatest living artists." IMO, they got 1 out of 6 right (1-15 if you include the 9 runners up). 5 of the top 6 were Americans(????)... & not even the right Americans!!! They vote for their friends or the people they think they're supposed to.
Nothing wrong with the comics' poll having a British bias, you are better at it than anyone.
Agree: Steve Martin not funny, Woody Allen: used to write some very funny movies; don't know Hill or Kay. As for the rest, Christopher Guest: mean-spirited, picks only the easiest, lamest of targets; Steven Wright: depressing, Larry David: no thanks.
All personal taste really, I guess, no reason to take offense... opinions are like navels, to put it politely.

Hours of testcard tomfoolery such as This was broadcast on Manchesters' Channel M, all broadcast live & ad-libbed, tons can be found on YouTube. He gave many guest appearances on TV & Radio, usually accompanied by Little Frank, his smaller cardboard ventriloquist cohort, but he should possibly be best known for his Fantastic Shed Show the Thunderbirds obsessed paper mache headed star in his own Town of Timperley, now has his own statue.
Not always the most musical, the shambolic shenanigans only added to the amusement.
I saw his show on 2 occasions & met him making some TV in Liverpool one sunny afternoon. A joy to see him bringing amusement to young & old - just before he did his piece to camera, he asked a bemused looking old lady "Is my hair flat?"

Even though I didn't get them I guess the Goon's. My stepfather loves them and whenever I would walk past his shed on the weekend I would hear him cracking up laughing. I couldn't quite get it lot's of strange voices. And definitely the Marx Brother's. As I have said before I believe these are the Beatles and Stones of comedy. Opening up so many different directions for others to follow. Also Cheech and Chong.. Cheech like Peach Chong like dong. The best drug humour. A funny fact that Cheech said on a commentary track is that Stacey Keach was actually busted for dope and neither Cheech or Chong were.. Save Those God Damn Whales... Kill the Seals....
