Futurologist guru Alvin Toffler dies
Alvin Toffler, the author of Future Shock and other works predicting social, economic and technological change, has died at the age of 87. Future Shock, which sold 15 million copies, defined people's anxiety at the pace of social change in the 1960s. Toffler popularised terms such as "information overload" and his works led world leaders and business moguls to seek his advice. He predicted the rise of the internet and decline of the nuclear family. He died in his sleep late on Monday at his home in Bel Air, Los Angeles. Online chat rooms Although many writers in the 1960s focused on social upheavals related to technological advancement, Toffler wrote in a page-turning style that made difficult concepts easy to understand. Future Shock (1970) argued that economists who believed the rise in prosperity of the 1960s was just a trend were wrong - and that it would continue indefinitely. The Third Wave, in 1980, was a hugely influential work that forecast the spread of emails, interactive media, online chat rooms and other digital advancements. But among the pluses, he also foresaw increased social alienation, rising drug use and the decline of the nuclear family. Space colonies Not all of his futurist predictions have come to pass. He thought humanity's frontier spirit would lead to the creation of "artificial cities beneath the waves" as well as colonies in space. One of his most famous assertions was: "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn." Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, China Prime Minister Zhao Ziyang and Mexican business guru Carlos Slim were among those who sought his advice. The futurologist, also termed futurist by some, was born to Jewish Polish immigrants in 1928 and honed his theories working for IBM and other technology firms in the 60s. Toffler is survived by his wife, Heidi, with whom he collaborated on many of his books.

Ah sad news indeed about Gordon Murray. Another piece of my long-lost childhood erm lost. I well remember sitting with my mother and watching these strange characters moving about but the one over-riding thing I really remember are ALL the songs from 'Camberwick Green', 'Trumpton', and 'Chigley'. Who could forget "Time flies by, when I'm the driver of a train" from Chigley(Lord Belborough and his butler Brackett steaming through the countryside on the footplate of his private train Bessie), or the utterly brilliant fireman song from 'Trumpton' which started with all the firemen sliding down the pole and then a quick movement to acknowledge their names "Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew(never said a word and looked as if his eyes were shut yet he was the main driver), Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb" Poor old Captain Flack, he never had a real fire to put out. Finally 'Camberwick Green' songs, like 'Driving Along...in an army truck, in a humpity, bumpity army truck" and 'Peter the Postman' not to mention the village gossip 'Mrs Honeyman' who meant well but drove people mad "Chatter, chatter, have you heard the latest gossip, not a word to anyone...but did you know that natter, natter, well my dear you could have knocked me over with a feather...I was SHOCKED!" Brilliant stuff still to be enjoyed by today's kids. RIP Gordon you gave pleasure to millions of us kids.

death of Tesla driver Joshua Brown, 40
US authorities are investigating the first death potentially caused by self-driving technology. The driver of a Tesla car died in Florida in May after colliding with a lorry. Under scrutiny is Tesla's Autopilot feature, which automatically changes lanes and reacts to traffic. In a statement, Tesla said it appeared the Model S car was unable to recognise "the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky" that had driven across the car's path. The company said the crash this year was a "tragic loss". The collision led to the death of Tesla driver Joshua Brown, 40. The driver of the truck, which was pulling a trailer, was unhurt. Autonomous reputation On Thursday, Tesla stressed that cars being controlled by Autopilot had travelled 130 million safe miles to date. The company said in a statement: "The high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer, with the bottom of the trailer impacting the windshield of the Model S." "Had the Model S impacted the front or rear of the trailer, even at high speed, its advanced crash safety system would likely have prevented serious injury as it has in numerous other similar incidents."
