The way I approach this is, especially when viewing a Japanese Adult Video [JAV]:

I can recognize when a movie is recycling a porn plot. When I do, then I just transliterate what an English-speaking character would be uttering {"You can improve your chances of winning the pageant if you have sex with a judge."}.

Well, as an English-speaker I thank porn for giving me a 30-year career in translation and interpretation! I actually started with Airfix kits (airplane models, etc.) that had explanations of the models in EN/FR/DE. Not much porn around in the UK in the 70s.

It was just a matter of time before I got into hardcore Danish mags, and my German improved immensely. During my stay in France, surprise surprise, my go-to source was French porn. My advice would be to stick to your area of interest (football, politics, knitting) and your command of the language will come on in leaps and bounds.

Dubbing or subtitles has always been a question of economics - big countries always dub (it's worth it in the cinemas) and small ones subtitle. The problem with English is that FR/DE porn films were dubbed into a kind of sleazy LA American English that makes them comical (it's either that of Miss Marple).

And I agree with vincez, JAV is a challenge. But isn't it a bit better when there are subtitles? My next crusade is to learn Japanese - I won't tell my teacher, but most of my grammar will be coming from grunts and screams in school libraries and subway trains ☺.

If it's a porn movie, I don't care about the dialogue at all. Worst is if there are subtitles over the action, who actually cares what they say during sex?
