Actually they learned very quickly that they can demand the same as British workers, so the days of the cheap Pole were very short lived, the only ones that work for pea nuts are illegals, and that can cost you £10k for each employee, unless you are a Labour peer or Front Bencher! As for benefits, out lovely politicians don't want to 'fess up to the fact that European migrants are only eligible because the British system is primarily NON-CONTRIBUTORY despite the fact the national insurance tax is called a "contribution". Hence, as I understand it, this is less of an issue in say Germany where because migrants haven't contributed, they don't get.

The other thing that gets me about Eastern European migration is what it says about racism i.e. what would the British response have been if 1,000,000 Black people had suddenly turned up?

You are not wrong there but if a vacancy in London can not be filled by an unemployed chemist in the North then what is a businessman supposed to do?

If a woman turns up at an NHS hospital and shes pregnant the hospital wont turn her away, remember the hippocratic oath. Yes foreigners are meant to pay (theres a whole section in the NHS thats supposed to bill non British nationals) but in effect they get free treatment, unlike us British taxpayers who do pay for our treatment.

Actually no, it comes straight out of the department for Work and Pensions.

Sadly the facts are as stated, as for the other comments about professional staff, such as chemists, of course they will employ from the new countries, at substantially lower salaries, without the commitment and requirement to pay for, and subsidise additional professional qualifications and training, the fact that the biggest complaint in the NHS is the fact that the staff do not speak English, is immaterial.
