So my question, how did you American members experience this Satanic Panic when growing up? Did it affect your lives in any way? Did you believe in it or did you just think it was nonsense?

I grew up in the "Bible Belt" as a non-denominational christian so I remember the hysteria quite well.

My parents weren't nearly as strict with me as some of my friends parents were. This pentecostal kid I knew was a drummer and he kept his Rush lp's hidden in a crawlspace so his parents would not burn them which was a common occurrence throughout my neighborhood.

I remember several adults getting worked up after seeing the television movie Mazes and Monsters (1982) starring Tom Hanks that depicted teens loosing all grip on reality while playing Dungeons and Dragons.

Speaking of D&D, I started playing with a group of friends in 1984 and one of them had to quit because his parents found out and from that point on they forbade him to see me.

there were several satanic records trials. not sure if it was Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton or Ozzy Osbourne himself who said of "backwards masking " ( art of hiding messages revealed only when record played backwards ) "IF we were to put hidden messages in our songs, it would be to buy more records."

later this all de-evolved into the PMRC. Parents Music Resource Council. Tipper Gore AKA Senator Gore's (D) wife and Tippy Baker...Senator Baker 9 (R) wife had teenagers who were listening to music on a newfangled invention called a Walkman. one of the moms was curious so she put on the headphones...

still, the record industry could see the writing on the wall and they decided to "self-censor" and came up with those ubiquitous black and white warning offensive lyric labels which made millionaires out of a ton of metal and rap groups like 2 Live Crew. 12 yr old walks into a record store....sees the label...HEY ! there are swear words on this ! and buys it !

the late great Zappa actually made an album and titled it with a play on words of his original band name.....Frank Zappa meets the Mothers Of Prevention. original name was invention. one side was music dealing with this crap, the other side was his testimony in front of Congress.

thanks Mal Hombre. real tragedy was the song Better By You, Better Than Me resulted in an 18yr old killing himself and 20 yr old maimed himself. later sued the band and if I am not mistaken, became a "spokesman" for various evangelical outfits looking to ban satan's music.

The PMRC hearings certainly had their moments of levity. all these grey haired representatives who had no idea who these "long hairs" were, questioning lyrics to songs they never heard. all of these grey hairs had young interns standing behind them with smirks full well knowing the songs and what a joke this all was. well...censorship is no joke and Jack Valenti was who head of MPAA motion picture assn America told RIAA to censor itself before the govt did.

by the way, PMRC Tipper and Kathy came up with 15 songs. here they are , makes quite the mix tape. showing my 80s again ;-)

lol Trashed was actually about what happens if you KEPT drinking and driving. from the Born Again album. Ian Gillan of Deep Purple Mk II had taken ovder from Ronnie James Dio (RIP) who left the band. Bev Bevan from ELO on drums replacng Bill Ward who'd been fired for excessive drinking ironically.
