porn trends
I'd be curious to read more about the porn industry history and its evolution: in particular, how do trends come? how do they go?
Take for instance 90's German (and to a lesser extent French) porn: somewhere in the early 90's, a good 60% of French and German stars / starlettes were asked to perform anal fistfucking or watersports almost as "standard" routine. How did it become, even briefly, a strong trend (if not a rule)? As an answer to these questions, i think there's more to say than "because it sells". We all know that porn is money, but which factors make one day's "extreme" act become next day's standard, or vice-versa? |

Great topic you've raised there, Cole. I think that as time goes on trends are going to come and go at a faster rate as the internet develops.
We've seen how home video has had an effect on the industry over the past 25 or 30 years, we'll I think the web is going to amplify that effect. As to the content of French and German productions as you point out, I found they broke taboos of what I was being offered as a consumer. I suppose there is always a time when (for want of a better word) 'underground' breaks into 'mainstream' in some way. |

I recently heard an online interview of Christophe Clark (in french): after he paid tribute to Gabriel Pontello who helped him in his early porn years, he immediatly added that Pontello was now in another world, obviously alluding to Pontello working underground, still busy with the extreme stuff (btw, is he still active today?). Even though he was not dismissing him at all, it kind of surprised me that CC, very much a champion of extreme ass gaping himself, would feel "obliged" to state that Pontello had embraced the dark side of the force. It's as if he was assuming that today's porn audience can't understand, let alone condone Pontello's activies.
It felt a bit strange and echoed another interview by Jean-Pierre Armand where JP sort of apologized for the extreme 90's years (did he mentioned "dirty" or "disgusting" activities? can't remember). He was implying that he had no choice left then but accept the dirty work: whether he was sincere in his regret/disgust or making a hypocritical mea culpa in desperate search of respectability is anybody's guess. (that said, i can understand how a male performer who destroyed loads of female rectums with his fist could feel sincerely guilty and wish to express public regrets: i'm not judging anyone here).
