Great analogy with George Wallace - a cynical populist who went wherever the wind was blowing for his own ends. But, unlike Trump, he was both highly intelligent and a gifted politician. Wallace started off as a liberal, supporting the downtrodden - black and white alike. When that stance threatened to derail his career, he turned into a white supremacist. After an assassination attempt left him wheelchair bound, he publicly renounced his racism and went out of his way to undo some of the damage he'd done. Trump, of course, would never admit he was wrong, let alone apologize. For anything, to anyone. Secondly, while I don't agree with them, I miss the RedHatters on here. They stopped this thread from turning into an echo chamber. That said, maybe the RedHatters are having their George Wallace moment circa 1980: "I was wrong. I am sorry". |

March 19th piece by Michael Gerson
The title for this article in my local paper was TRUMP'S WORLDVIEW ...
I really like what Mr. Gerson has to say in his article. From 'the greatest generation' to what I would now call 'the (self) entitled' generation. The last 3 paragraphs says it all about how far we have fallen as a country: Quote:
It still burns me that somehow a person got elected to the country's highest office while knowing nothing about government (except how to find out who to bribe), about economics (except how to cheat others out of their money), or about the world outside of New York and Florida really works. |

The wheels of justice grind slow, but they grind fine. Mueller's strategy is to destroy Trump's credibility piece by piece, so that the case for impeachment will be beyond reasonable doubt and Trump's removal from office inevitable.
Mueller's playing the long game, the leaks from his office the equivalent of Chinese water torture for Dumbo Don. Take today's news - Gates knew he was dealing with a former Russian spy during Dumbo Don's election campaign, and John Dowd (Trump's now ex-lawyer) talked pardoning Manafort and Flynn last summer. The innocent don't need pardoning. Plus pornstars and playmates. So: treason, money laundering, obstruction of justice and mucho sleaze. And Comey's book is due out very soon. And it's still only March. |

Slightly off-topic, but i wanted to mention it anyway:
I find it odd that Michael Gerson can think that Trump's apparent view that the US is like any other country is 'extreme nationalism'. Michael Gerson should remember that the US is a nation just like any other nation. In my view to claim anything different is also a form of 'extreme nationalism' as it equates to "my country is better than every other country". What's this crap about "as Truman might have said"? It also seems Michael Gerson has 'somehow' forgot that Russia and Britain etc. also liberated death camps. Does He not realise that "inspiring dissidents"/helping to cause civil unrest and possibly arming and training them does not "secure the peace on every contested border"? "seizes the burden and glory of freedom"? He actually means "quite often breaks international law and helps to force revolution onto countries so that they can get the regime changed to one that will lick the US's arse." I know I'm a Brit living in Britland so Yank politics has nothing to do with me, but I find hypocrisy too annoying to ignore. Sorry for the rant.

"American exceptionalism" is a good part of the problem. In truth, it is not much worse than the Han Chinese belief that they are the center of the world and source of all civilization. Or the Serbs belief that they have a divine destiny to rule the Balkans. The British, Germans and Japanese harbored similar conceits until 20th Century events humbled them. In my opinion, the Trump administration is hastening the United States towards its comeuppance. That is not really a bad thing. At their best, Americans are friendly, generous, and kind. Our worst elements are just as vicious as the stupid and sadistic of any nation, but my experience living in my country is that the worst are a small minority. It is really to be hoped that our present represents some sort of hitting bottom as we come to our senses. |

Many times I had people go out of their way to help the poor befuddled tourist. And New Yorkers are nothing like their reputation They seem immensely proud of their amazing city and they are also friendly and kind...although why they constantly grizzle about the best subway system in the world is a mystery to me. I like to think that the current situation is an aberration that will pass. |

Clinton was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice, not for cheating on his wife (which isn't a crime, or Trump would be under multiple investigations for that too). It took three years between the start of then Special Prosecutor Ken Starr's investigation into Clinton (on totally unrelated matters, namely dodgy business deals in the 1970s and 80s) and his recommending impeachment. Three years, Bosko. Mueller hasn't even had a year, and he is investigating something far more complex with a bigger cast of characters. And until there is conclusive proof that Russians hacked/tampered with voting machines in states Trump won, Hillary lost the election. Yes, yes, she won the popular vote (most of the three million from California), but lost the electoral college. Finally, when/if Trump goes you'll get President Pence, not President Clinton. And where Trump is a moron, Pence is very scary. A homophobic NRA-owned moron who believes God talks to him, calls his wife 'mother', and had a dire track record as governor in Indiana. Be careful what you wish for. Last edited by frank07; March 29th, 2018 at 02:43 PM.. |

Speaking of which, the misplaced faith placed in Donald Trump by the more backward areas of the country is becoming more evident with each news cycle. Pence's lunatic fringe beliefs likely will keep Trump safe from an impeachment trial, but may not save him from post term prosecution. Blatant corruption and high treason are crimes that the Republic ought to take great pains to discourage. |

https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/29/polit...quo/index.html This pardon idea, if ever made manifest, will be the ignition of a powder keg. Combined with firing Mueller, I can't imagine what will happen next. Trump doesn't follow legal advice and he may believe he is above the law.
