I agree completely. I cannot think why the producers (and backers) believe they can go better than the original. I strongly suspect they know they cannot and the 'film' is a U.K. tax vehicle pure and simple. These films – Carry On, earlier Doctor series and the original St Trinian's films – are about the society of their time and don't translate to today's. Why aren't the studios trying to make new material? Partly the reason is that between 1953 – and say, roughly, – 1963, this country underwent a fantastic social revolution which had few historical precedents; certainly not involving the numbers of population nor the kinds of media that accompanied it. This was both the era of Carry On and the Angry Young Men, C.N.D. and strip clubs; even so, it had many features we would find incomprehensible today. I cannot think what comedy one could squeeze out of our times. The talent is there but the shared experience of war time, National Service and the newness of television can't be recreated. We just do not live the kind of lives that made camp a Robespierre and fart jokes, schoolgirls mugging pompous Civil Servants, hilarious. It is noticeable how television comedy has had to get much more surreal in a way because the idea of there being anything left to mock has vanished and the innocence that these older films exploited. Some, many to be honest, are dire to re-visit unless you are drunk. But several will survive as records of a society that like a black and white television set housed in a cabinet of veneered wood seems to belong in a museum.

I agree. The film is currently being shot (mainly) in my home town and has prompted a fair bit of discussion amongst residents here. The feeling amongst many is that although folks wish the film every success, there will be too much comparison made with the original TV series. I feel that remakes rarely work as well as the original.

I was told that they have the highest budget for a British made film for many years but I have no confirmation that that is true. I know there are lot of local businesses doing well out of it with substantial sums of cash being doled out for the use of premises etc..

Default Carry On Forever

Not a bad series. Most of the anecdotes will be familiar to fans, but there have been a few new on-set pictures, and some newsfilm from the making of, amongst others, " ...Up The Khyber".

EDIT: Having seen the last part, they went easy on "...England" and "...Columbus", understandably as Patrick Mower and Jim Dale were two of the contributors, but even then couldn't disguise the fact that they were pretty ropey.

Love this thread, so much background on a series of films I grew up on. Going back to the Jenny Cox striptease scene, does anyone have a copy of that music or know where to obtain one from? It was also used in the film Doctor In Trouble and I believe it's called "Stripper Theme". Have looked all over the place.

A quick heads-up that "The Big Job", a Carry On in all but name is currently being shown on Talking Pictures TV. Produced, directed and written by CO regulars, it stars Sid, Joan, and Jim (Dale), together with Dick Emery, Lance Percival and Edina Ronay, and was one I hadn't seen before.

One of the women who appeared in Carry On Up the Khyber turned up with a poster(which turned out to be pretty rare) on the Antiques Roadshow last Sunday-you can still see that episode via the BBC iplayer at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer and navigate to last Sunday. I couldn't find which woman it was in the main cast list, but it could have been the woman called Busti (she is seen in cartoon form on the poster)
