Default Aw, Snap! Something went wrong . . . error message

I am using a Dell Vostro laptop with a 64 bit motherboard, operating Windows 7. This device dates from mid 2011, and has always run well . . . in spite of my lack of IT skills. When I have problems, I usually go to my second computer (a Dell XPS 27 desktop running Windows 8.1) and google search until I find answers.

Recently I downloaded a free copy of the VSDC Video Editor from their web-site. When I installed it on my laptop, things quickly went bad. I got pop-ups from my system telling me that some scripts were no longer running, and . . . . horrors . . . both Google Chrome and Opera stopped working.

After uninstalling VSDC and running a malware scan, I still could not get Chrome or Opera to run. I kept getting a message saying;

“Aw, Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage”

I was able to find many websites offering solutions (like the one below).

But . . . . and it was most frustrating . . . .both Chrome and Opera would crash so fast that I could not even attempt to follow the suggested steps. Even in "Incognito" mode, Chrome would crash within 2 seconds.

I uninstalled both browsers, and re-installed them; but to no avail. The instantaneous crashes continued.

I finally found a site where this constant crash state was being discussed, and found one suggestion that worked for me. Hopefully it will work for others, too. Here it is . . . .

Install the 32 bit versions of both Chrome and Opera

I suspect that the 64 bit versions of these browsers encountered some kind of conflict with Windows 7. I'm not sure why this suddenly started to happen, but I'm glad to have my laptop back to normal.

An update . . . .

Over the past couple of weeks I have continued to receive periodic notifications that various bits and pieces of my laptop's software have stopped working.

These are the most common, and the screen-caps are posted in the order that they usually pop-up when I log into my User account to begin a browsing session. Fortunately, they do not all appear at each log-in. The various conflicts appear to be intermittent







I have only seen each of the following pop-ups once (on two different occasions).





I also received a couple of pop-up messages from MS Word and MS Excel; but after running a compatibility check, they now open and function normally.

After "googling" these pop-up messages, I was convinced that malware had done real damage to my operating system. So I ran Malware-bytes, and it found (and quarantined) the bad script that had downloaded with the video editor.

This was a bit of a surprise, because I had previously run Trend-Micro and Spy-bot Search & Destroy; and they did not identify this poisonous file. I guess that each distributor of internet security products maintains a different library of signatures.

In any event . . . . my Windows 7 laptop continues to operate well; even if it does "complain" from time-to time.

Fingers crossed that it continues to keep going. I do not want to have to go through a clean re-install of Windows 7 at this late date.

Posting your issue to malware forum like bleeping computer and getting feedback from someone whose been trained to really understand them cant really be beaten

They use far more powerful software to scan your entire system which produce logs that they then read and comeback with a specific solution.
