Or as Gaeilge - Poitín, but Poteen is a reasonable approximation of how to pronounce it. I've drank Raki in Greece (similar to your Rajika Estreeter ? ) - the locally brewed stuff which is loony juice.
And as for 5 people to invite to dinner ? Einstein Newton Feynman Edison and Charlie Mops - the man who invented beer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwgx7EvUuZE Last edited by Jeff Vader; August 19th, 2011 at 08:53 PM.. |

Disregarding my earlier attempt at humor post, I would like to have the 5 following gentlemen over for dinner:
Thomas Jefferson John Adams Benjamin Franklin James Madison James Monroe We could chat about the founding of this country, the Declaration, the Constitution, and how freaky women were back then. We could drink lots of wine and white whisky. |

Boy you threw that one out like a poison dart.
You could also try and look at the positives that these mean achieved not just in the world of politics but in many different studies. Maybe you would want to talk to Jefferson about his authorship of the Bill for Religious Freedom. A fairly reasoned and thought out thesis that I know you will appreciate. Or maybe you could talk to Jefferson about his architectural design of the earliest building at the Univerisity of Virginia. Or maybe you could talk to Jefferson about his primary authorhship of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Or talk to Jefferson about farming, flora and fauna, wine, food and thousands of other topics that he had a interest in and knowledge of. A very gifted, intelligent and knowledgable man and one who is much revered in the United States. Maybe you could talk to Franklin about his experiments with electricity. Or his study of oceanography and metereology. You could also jam out with Jefferson and Franklin as they were both accomplished musicians. Hell, I think all of those guys would be fun as hell to hang out with! And don't forget both Jefferson and Washington grew lots of hemp so party favors will be had for all! We are all aware of their failures as humans and as politicians and we all know the history of the United States. I choose to celebrate the great accomplishments of these men while also remembering their failures. The times often make the man and these men all accomplished great things despite their many 21st century, 20/20 hindsight failings. I think even you would admit that.

All these gentlemen were huge intellectuals in their time and space (the New World) but their political, social and economic actions were pure contradictions of what they used to preach. Thomas Jefferson is probably the best example among these men, considering him as THE advocate of democracy and human rights, while a slaveholder at the same time, depriving these slaves from the human rights he was advocating. It would indeed be a very interesting experience to face Mr. Jefferson with his ambivalences just like the other listed gentlemen. We would never go out of topics, from politics to art and science. But let's not forget why these men were able to contribute so much in political theories, literature and even science: they were rich and could afford the time and education. This wealth came from the hard labor of people they enslaved. Besides everything else you mentioned, from good wine to women of their time, this must be discussed, too, brother keefriff. I wouldn't do it myself though. I'd send Howard Zinn. |

You must also remember that neither Franklin or Adams were slaveholders. Franklin was a self-made man who acquired his wealth from his printing businesses and Adams was one of the most prominent lawyers in Boston. In fact, Adams defended the British soldiers accused of the "Boston Massacre" and won acquittals for all the soldiers.
