Scissors perhaps?

Strange I can not remember when last I saw a petrol mower, most in the UK are electric, and many are cordless too!
during my peacekeeping tour in Bougainville it was a common sight to see the locals 'mowing' grass using a 'panga' or 'grass knife'-which can best be described as a razor sharp narrow bladed machete-with a fairly heavy blade-with one of these they could produce a bowling green grade lawn-seemingly effortlessly-though I doubt any westerner could do the same. All the males-from about 4 years old in the rural areas seemed to carry one-and I suspect the demonstrated skill arose from long familiarity with their use.

Needless to say-in a melee, especially if the participants were drunk-they were dreadful weapons-as aptly demonstrated in Rwanda and a few other places

I, for one, never used a gasoline powered mower, but an electric one. I now commence the debate about which one uses the less petroleum based power.

I suppose an electric type mower would work on certain size yards, but there is still the hassle of dragging along and navigating the electric power cord and avoid the danger of running it over and cutting it.
In a yard such as mine nearly the length of a football field an electric mower would be impractical and not work well. I would require, have to navigate, and cope with at least 300 feet of electric power cord. I would probably also have a staggering electric bill.

Anyone recall the 'Flymo'? These were a combination of a lawnmower and a hovercraft-and when introduced seemed to be the ideal answer to effortless lawn mowing.....until people discovered -the hard way-that a 'floating' lawnmower on any kind of slope is a very dangerous implement.

I'm not sure if they were ever officially banned in NZ-but I do know they were the cause of some horrific injuries to people, children and pets in their time...

....and apparently now still available here in NZ

My mate and his missus live in apartment with a smallish lawn so he bought a modern version of a hand mower. It works great. Easy to push, even through long grass and easy to keep the blades sharp. When mine carks it, I'll buy one. The what annoys me most part, is that I didn't get one earlier.

My electric mower that came from B&Q (not that long ago), uses a nylon cord on a reel as opposed to a metal blade. Works pretty well and won't chop your toes off!

From memory, early Flymos (maybe others, too) had a rigid steel blade, but they were replaced with plastic fold-back blades that were less lethal.
Doesn't stop eejits who insist on wearing flip-flops though!
