A white cop who learned 18 percent of his DNA could be traced to the continent of Africa has filed a civil rights suit against his chief and the city of Hastings, Michigan alleging that he was subject to racist and derogatory behavior from his colleagues. Cleon Brown originally said he was “proud of his African heritage,” but things quickly soured when his colleagues started treating him differently.

Brown said after he shared the results of his Ancestry.com genetic test with his coworkers, fellow officers started whispering “black lives matter” when walking by his desk. He said his boss, Police Chief Jeff Pratt, would call him “Kunte.” But that wasn’t all. At Christmas, when the police department lobby was decorated with Santa figurines for each member of the force, Brown’s was a black Santa with “18 percent” written across the beard. Even Hastings’ former mayor got in on the ribbing.

“There was an instance where my client was talking to the mayor, and the mayor ― upon learning that my client was 18 percent African-American ― proceeded to tell him a racist joke,” said Brown’s attorney Karie Boylan, who is representing him in the federal lawsuit against Hastings, the town’s police chief, its deputy chief, a sergeant, and the city manager.

“These are law enforcement officers,” Boylan said. “These are people who are supposed to understand cultural sensitivities.”

Let’s just set aside that comment for a moment in order to address the obvious here: This whole thing is basically a “Chappelle Show” sketch. The main difference, however, between Cleon Brown and Clayton Bigsby — without turning this into another Rachel Dolezal thing where every dingus with an opinion thinks they can speak to the complexities of race in America (I certainly can’t) — is that when Bigsby took off his hood it caused a Klan member’s head to explode. Brown had to take a goddamn DNA test in order to start getting treated any differently, and even then, it was just some shitty jokes from his racist colleagues.

Which is to say, I don’t know whether civil rights lawsuits are for white people who get upset because of the results of a home genetics test.

Hugh Hewitt wanted to drive home a point in an interview with Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price on Friday morning.

The conservative radio host brought up an incident in which a reporter was arrested while trying to shout questions during Price's appearance at West Virginia's state capitol.

The reporter, Dan Heyman, was taken into custody on Tuesday after he allegedly followed Price, senior White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, and others down a hallway at the capitol, asking questions about healthcare policy.

Heyman was charged with willful disruption of state government processes.

Hewitt took up the incident with Price on Friday.

"I am a journalist, so I have to start with what happened to a member of my tribe, Dan Heyman, in West Virginia this week," Hewitt said. "Do you think the charges should be dropped against Mr. Heyman?"

Price deferred the question to local authorities.

"Look, this fellow, we were walking into the state capitol, and a fellow was yelling at us, which is not necessarily unusual from the press," he said. "But I turned the corner to head on into the round table, and something happened afterwards."

Price did not elaborate. Hewitt pressed Price again.

"I know we can be jerks, and I know we can yell, etc., but we shouldn’t be arrested even when we are totally off the charts screaming at people," Hewitt said, suggesting to Price that his staff should "nudge" West Virginian authorities to drop the case.

Price seemed to suggest the reporter was out of line for asking questions outside of a scheduled press conference he and Conway were going to. "Our detail was making certain that we were able to get to the round table and to the press conference. This wasn’t in the press conference, you know, Hugh," Price said. "This was, this gentleman was not in the press conference."

McDonald's has decided to withdraw its latest TV advert, which was criticised for exploiting childhood bereavement.

The fast food giant had already apologised for "upset" caused by the advert, first aired on 12 May.

It features a boy who struggles to find something in common with his dead father until he goes to McDonald's.

A spokeswoman for McDonald's said the British advert will be removed from all media this week and it will review its creative process to avoid a repeat.

"It was never our intention to cause any upset," read the statement.

"We are particularly sorry that the advert may have disappointed those people who are most important to us - our customers.

"Due to the lead-times required by some broadcasters, the last advert will air on Wednesday 17 May.

"We will also review our creative process to ensure this situation never occurs again."
