The reputation of Formula One might be affected
Damon Hill has spoken out today about the current scandal over Renault's extreme behaviour at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, where Nelson Piquet Jnr claims he was instructed to crash deliberately so that the safety car would be deployed.
''I'm concerned that the sport is going to suffer as a genuine challenge of skill and competativeness'', says Mr Hill. Really? I personally am quite worried that the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo could have very serious repercussions.

Wellington
As Lord Chesterfield said of the generals of his day, "I only hope that when the enemy reads the list of their names, he trembles as I do."
A comment made to Colonel Robert Torrens about some of his generals in a despatch (29 August 1810) Usually attributed, perhaps incorrectly, as I don't know what effect these men will have on the enemy, but by God, they terrify me. I have seen their backs before, madam. This is attributed to Wellington as a statement to an unidentified woman at a reception in Vienna, who had apologized for the rudeness of some French officers who had turned their backs on him when he entered. |

Le Brave des Braves
Bravest of the brave
Napoleon, on Marshal Ney. Ney was born in Saarlouis, then French, now in Germany. Joined the army in 1787. Battle honours during the Revolutionary Wars include Valmy, Neerwinden and Mainz where he was wounded. By now a General de Brigades he was captured at Neuwied but later exchanged for an Austrian General. Promoted to a full General after Mannheim, Ney was wounded at Winterthur then fought at Hohenlinden. During the Napoleonic Wars, and by now a Marshal, Ney fought at Elchingen, Innsbruck, Jena, Erfurt, Madgeburg, Eylau, Guttstart, and Freidland. Sent to Spain he fought at Ciudad Rodrigo, Côa, and Buçaco and was relieved of his command after the retreat from Torres Vedras. In Russia Ney commanded III Corps. He was wounded in the neck at Smolensk but fought at Borodino. Commanding the rear guard in the retreat from Moscow Ney was cut off from the army but managed to rejoin it. At Beresina legend has it that Ney was last across the bridge to leave Russia. Given what a catastrophe that was it seems incredible, but I wasn't there so I won't say it isn't true. In the 1813 campaign Ney fought at Weissenfels, was wounded at Lützen, and commanded the left wing at Bautzen. Ney later fought at Dennewitz and Leipzig, where he was again wounded. Leipzig was the largest battle in Europe prior to WWI. In June 1815 Ney commanded the left wing of the Army of the North, fighting the Allies at Quatre Bras. At Waterloo he had five horses killed under him. After the French defeat the Bourbon monarchy was reinstalled. Ney was tried for treason and found guilty. Ney was executed by rifle fire in a park in Paris, on his own orders. "I have fought a hundred battles for France, and not one against her."
