This is a wonderful thing just 3 miles north of where I live. It is called the Wooded Isle. Back before 1900 this was a smelly swamp. In 1893 a World Fair was built in Chicago. It was called The Columbian Exposition. The swamp was dredged by the Army Corps of Engineers and then re-filled with water from Lake Michigan. In the foreground is the Museum of Science and Industry. During the Exposition this building was only one tenth the size of what it is now. To the right is Lake Michigan. You can see a small boat harbor, but that is just one of three much larger boat harbors that exist south of this picture in Jackson Park. Jackson Park is home to an 18 hole public golf course and the famous La Rabida Children's Hospital and Research Center. In the nearground is what is called the Wooded Isle. If you look closely you can see an asphalt trail that was built that goes 3/4 of a mile around the island. On the island is also a beautiful Japanese Garden. To the left of the Wooded Isle is Hayes Drive. Hayes drive keeps to the left and goes around the Museum and ends at the 57th street intersection that leads to Lakeshore Drive or what was once called the Outer Drive. It is a 45 mph roadway with 4 lanes going in each direction for 18 miles. The water in the lagoon that surrounds the Wooded Isle is only 2 feet deep. During the winter this usually freezes and stays frozen until Spring. The water in the lagoon is home to fish of all kinds, frogs and other amphibians. During the spring and summer months many kinds of ducks and geese like to swim in the lagoon. This part of the Wooded Isle is only about one quarter of the whole Island, which is not shown in this photo. Jackson Park is Chicago's largest park. It is 500 acres in size.

This is what is known as a spillway on the I & M Canal. On the right is the trail and just to its left is the canal. On the left behind those trees is the Illinois River. When there are heavy rains in the spring and summer so much water builds up in the river that it overflows its banks and gets into the canal. To prevent the canal from overflowing and flooding nearby houses is built a concrete slide below the level of the Illinois river letting excess water drain out which then flows into a sewer drain put in by the municipality. There are several of these spillways along the 64 mile length of the I & M Canal.

Here is a scetion of the I & M Canal trail near the small town of Marseilles in LaSalle County, Illinois. You may wonder: Where is the canal. It is to the right of the trail. In many places along the 64 mile length of the canal the water in the canal dried up and was replaced by shrubs and weeds and other plants. This photo shows that.

No, This is not a photo of me. This is a very interesting section of the I & M canal. In the city of Willow Springs, Cook County Illinois is a special area. Not in the photo, but just nearby where this man is standing is the Willow Springs train station for Metra( Metropolitan Rail of Chicago) a commuter train that takes people to downtown Chicago. There is a separate parking area for the train station. Behind the man you see a parking lot. That is the parking lot for people who want to hike the I & M canal trail. Just a few feet left of the man is the entrance to the trail. What is interesting is that there is a long plaque with black&white photos taken when the canal was under construction. There are about one hundred very old photos from around 1848. This part of the canal is very old and worn out. There are fallen and rotting tree logs that have fallen into the canal. Even more interesting is that there is a two mile loop. One side of the loop there can be seen the I & M canal, and on the other side of the loop can be seen the much larger, wider and still in use Sanitary and Ship Canal that was built after 1900. This canal was originally built to siphon off waste water from Chicago until it flowed into the Illinois river. Now the canal is used for big ships that brings goods and supplies to the city of Joliet, Illinois
