I beg to differ. In Chicago all CVS pharmacies have this same system. Once you put your quarter in the slot it can't be removed until you hook the cart back up and then this little device pushes your quarter back out. Store employees can't get the quarter. Only management can with a special key.

CVS and other stores may be doing it in Chicago, but if you look at my post closely TM I said the stores around here are not, and probably will never do it.

You would think, and that was my first impression.

But I'm wondering if stores not utilizing those cart coin boxes feel that many customers, especially those parked in the parking lot furthest from the store, will simply sacrifice the quarter rather than walk the distance to return the cart, and they would still need to send an employee out to round up and return the carts to the store anyway.
Yes the store will be making/keeping a quarter on any cart not returned by the customer, but perhaps they feel that is insignificant and worth the bother, and why stores not utilizing the coin boxes have not done so.

We've had this system in Belgium for ages and it works. You have to insert a euro though, not a quarter.

Which is why here they are a pound! The other side of it is that should sacrificing the £1 become commonplace, kids in the UK would be shooting round collecting the £1s, they are pretty good at finding ways to make a quid!

I guess kids are kids all over. He in some parts of the US kids have found ways around auto anti-theft locking devices, ATMs, parking meters, home/store burglar alarms, and just about anything where there is a profit to be made!

When I was a lad my friends and I would take a couple of dead car batteries stored outside behind repair garages and cash them in at salvage/junk yards for a few dollars for gas money. Back then a few dollars would get about a half tank of gas!

Taking a trick out of one of our more famed (in?) members, does this guy really have the right to complain? Think the post should be deleted by the mods anyway!

Anecdotal evidence says they get paid AUS 5-8 dollars an hour
If they dont understand English very well - even less cash in hand

From what i've noticed around my local Westfield the shops only care about trolleys when they start running out of them.

They out source the collection and on a many occasions have been caught out underpaying

When they do an industry audit the guys who do the collecting 100% of the time
get caught out for underpayment / paying in cash etc

Communism isnt much better with my financial banking experiences of money sent needing an enforcer at the other end to extract the funds from the Russian bank employee...thats was back in 1999 - i'm sure its all dandy thesedays
