Harvard University just named Lawrence Bacow their new president. Before he could sit down for the first time in his new office, he was already under fire.

This was not in reference to any proposed policy or anything he did.. it's because he's white.

Harvard’s student newspaper, the Crimson, reported that the announcement “surprised and disappointed some students who had hoped a person of color would take the University’s top job” and referred to Mr. Bacow as the 28th white male to sit in the president’s office. This was after the New York Times greeted the news with the opinion that the university "missed an opportunity to choose a leader who would reflect the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements.”

They weren't done. In a Crimson editorial, Ruben Reyes Jr. denounced the choice as uninspiring and frankly a bit disappointing. The columnist further complained that Mr. Bacow “does not understand, first-hand, what it means to be reduced to your gender or the color of your skin.”

I'll bet he does... because it appears to be the only thing that his critics can see about him.

Not at all. At one time the vast majority of NFL defensive backs were white, but no more. However, it is doubtful that such an association can be formed quickly.

It has been said that one reason Jordy Nelson keeps getting open for deep passes is that NFL corners are in disbelief that a white boy can run that fast.

All NFL jokes aside, this does not change the facts that black journalists were under represented before recent rounds of media layoffs disproportionately thinned their numbers. Or that black journalists have been mostly confined to areas such as sports in mainstream media. The NABJ was founded in 1975, at about the same time frame as the Association of Black Cardiologists, the Association of Black Psychologists, and the Association of Black Sociologists. It is also noteworthy that many of these professions also feature women's associations. Sometimes there are even separate associations for Jewish women, Latina women, black women, etc.

Only students who are unaware of the position that Harvard University holds in the nation's power structure could be "surprised and disappointed." The Board of Trustees knows where their endowments come from and the bleatings of minority students will have little impact. Presumably, these kids will quickly figure out that if they wish to be heard by the Trustees, they need first amass fortunes denominated in billions of dollars.

One can only presume that The Times was burnishing its PC credentials. Everybody knows that the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter are not Harvard kind of people. I suppose a few tokens from the latter might be admitted, but starlets? Give me a break.

The Seattle Times received this "tip" from a 'concerned citizen':

“Hi. Suddenly there is a Confederate flag flying in front of a house in my Greenwood neighborhood. It is at the north-east corner of 92nd and Palatine, just a block west of 92nd and Greenwood Ave N. I would love to know what this ‘means’ … but of course don’t want to knock on their door. Maybe others in the area are flying the flag? Maybe it’s a story? Thank you.”



So, apparently anticipating a story, the paper dispatched a reporter to the scene...

What they found was Darold Norman Stangeland's house.

“That’s a Norwegian flag,” he says. “It’s been up there since the start of the Olympics.” Mr. Stangeland is of Norwegian descent, proud his homeland's performance in the Winter Olympics.
