Peter Wyngarde was indeed called Winegum by the crew working on Dept S and the later spin-off Jason King at Elstree. Everyone knew he was gay and nobody had any problems with it. Plod was pretty heavy handed in the way they dealt with him and as I recall, this was fairly damaging to his career. Actually, he was a charming person to meet, not that different from the way he was on TV and I say this from personal experience. Great voice as well!

Agree entirely with Nightjar. He was married at some stage in his life, his sexuality went ac/dc so what? Never did anyone harm, and plod took great relish in their actions. A nice chap, an entertainer. RIP

Indeed, he was a charming man. I have reviewed those local newspaper headlines from 1975 - none of them criticise his sexuality but just the attempted cover up - which was extensive. And therein lies the problem. It was that which largely destroyed his career and made him turn to drink. He was quite content to take the money resulting from his 'macho' image and those hordes of adoring women who wanted to bed him but refused to face up to the truth - and that amounts to conning people. Look at his extensive profile on IMDB - and how much you have to read before learning of his predilections. The cover up apparently continues even on death. But not on VEF.
