My late grandmother told the story of her brother coming home from WWI. She said he used to make a whistling sound when they were all kids growing up on their dairy farm, and one day (late 1918? 1919?), she heard it coming from down the road. It was her brother coming home from the War.
And I recall she said he brought a German Shepherd dog home with him, a dog from France who had befriended him (I'm not sure about this last part though... was shipping dogs home easier 100 years ago?). |

My father was one of ten children two of whom did not survive until their tenth birthdays such was the poor survival rate before modern surgery and antibiotics.
His eldest brother died aged 22 in June 1916 on the forced march after the Siege of Kut which is in modern Iraq. His body was never found and his name is commemorated on the Commonwealth Memorial near Basra. Two other brothers survived action in the First World War and one of that two died young in the late 20’s having suffered life changing injuries in service. |

Whereas warfare in the past to an extent was separate from the majority of civilians modern war involves the entire nation from the humblest of roles to those at the very top of the command chain. Every single link is vital. That is not to say civilians or brutality were ever excluded from previous conflicts such as the Wars of Religion in France, the siege of Magdeburg, the Peloponnesian War ie Scione and the massacre of the Plataeans. War throughout history has been brutal for everyone. No war films can describe or depict the real horror and especially the smells. Last edited by george anson; November 11th, 2018 at 01:27 PM.. |

Amidst all these sad tales I'd like to offer one to gladden the heart. A friend of mine told me many years ago of the story of how his grandparents met. My friend's Grandfather had long had a soft spot for a local girl who went to his school but had never had the courage to strike up a conversation with her or ask her out. Eventually he joined the forces and wound up in the trenches, where he was wounded, although thankfully for my friend, not seriously. He was transferred to a field hospital in France and who should be there on the nursing staff ? I'm sure you are ahead of me … the girl from his school back home. Anyway she helped to nurse him back to health and they became close, marrying after the war. The rest, as they say, is history.

Beg to differ, it's very easy to speculate but to indulge in metaphor on that point would incur the wrath of the moderator. No speculation there...
