Watched Quo Vadis, the old 1951 movie on TV last night. A love story where a Roman Legion Commander, favored by Nero, falls for a Christian girl. And how early Christians fared in Nero's Rome. It was good- not great, I thought, but good. Peter Ustinov as Nero pretty much stole the picture. And a supporting actress named Marina Berti was breathtakingly beautiful.

E01S02 of Star Trek Discovery. Still not sure about it yet. It's a still an uneasy mix of Roddenberry era naivety and trying to have a harder edge, but the episode was okay.

Watched a British TV true crime episode last night about the last woman hung in Britain. She had been stalking one of her two boyfriends for a few days and saw he was inside a pub. She waited outside, chased down the second boyfriend as he left the pub, and shot him repeatedly. She was drunk and on pills at the time. It happened in the mid-1950s. Forgot her name but she wasn't very likeable... her entire life was a sex-and-booze-filled, man-manipulating, violent trainwreck. But the bastard she shot wasn't likeable either. A good historical piece about a woman who wouldn't have been hung in the decades to come...

Thanks. But why didn't the crown prosecute her other boyfriend? The one that got her the gun, showed her how to use it, and drove her around as she hunted the other boyfriend so she could kill him. And the other boyfriend knew her plan. The TV show didn't really clarify that. They did, however, paint the 21-years-older-than-she-was, other boyfriend as a cuckold and a weasel. Miss Ellis had really, really bad judgment when it came to men...

That came out in the first series. For me, the real issue with the show, is that it highlights just how little sense a lot of the Roddenberry Star Trek mythos actually makes.

"Informer" -- Brit series on Amazon Prime. Kinda like a UK 24, but much, much better. Only seen episode one, but that was impressive.
Smart nods to great espionage thrillers, caught "The Third Man", "Tinker Tailor" and "The Wire" references in episode one. Maybe a little too obviously eager to present London as a rainbow coalition, but beautifully photographed and well acted. And the script wasn't stupid, which is a real mercy in a world of brain dead stupid police procedurals. Paddy Considine gets high marks for a man who can look world weary on cue . . . other actors are all first rate. |

Impulse. When it started I thought okay, it's an interesting enough story about a sixteen year old girl who has the power to teleport and someone else who has the same power and some sort of shadowy organisation. But over the series it has evolved into so much more, that her ability has become secondary to what else is going on around her.
If you like intelligent TV with a densely plotted, messy and complicated (just as real life is messy and complicated) storyline, I heartily recommend it. |

The Conclusion of season two of The Marvellous Mrs Maisel.
Rachel Brosnahan is just amazing as Midge Maisel, ably supported by Alex Borstein (the voice of Lois in family guy) as her 'not quite as tough as she thinks' manager Suzie, Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub as her much put upon parents and Michael Zegen as her ex-husband who still loves her and regrets that he can't deal with playing second fiddle to her success. As for the criticism that no one actually talks like that in real life, well, you have to remember that the show is seen through Midge's eyes. A perky, gorgeous brunette who thinks that even moments of sadness have a funny side. Last edited by Sir Honkers; January 29th, 2019 at 05:46 AM.. |
