As ol' Brucie would have said 'Didn't they do well !!'
All out for 180 odd with the last 5 for 15. Not much has changed since the winter. Is the Pakistan attack really that good ? |

Pakistan only played 6 tests in 2017 and this is the second this year having thrashed Ireland by 5 wickets. To all intents and purposes England's winter form looks to have become an all year round cold blast. Early days yet, so I am still hopeful.

^^ Taking the catches offered to you helps as well. Shame that England were reading from a different script today.
They could well find themselves 200 adrift when they bat tomorrow and then need at least 350 to try and save this one. |

The only positive from England's very poor batting on Day One is that Alastair Cook looked somewhat like Alastair Cook, playing a skillful and responsible innings. Once he was gone, the writing was on the wall.
England will lose by about 8 wickets no later than mid afternoon Day Four.

Not the best of days in the field with dropped catches, strange field settings and some odd choices for short leg as well as some just enjoying the best view in the house, with the ball going in the opposite direction.
Currently we appear to be a disorganised outfit. To be fair to Pakistan though most of them have played mainly the pyjama game due to limited red ball cricket. I know its only the first test but thus far they have applied themselves far better to the longer format. |

I don't think knee jerk reactions are good in any way, and I referred to Joe Root as FEC many many years ago, and thought he would make a good one, but alas I was wrong. Very wrong. He seems to be tactically inept. Mind you I am not sure there is anybody in the current team who might be better, our two most experienced players can't even decide what is the best end to bowl from, and what length to bowl the ball, and when it doesn't swing, try to get it changed every 5 minutes.
I remember two mantra's from my 1st XI coach at school that seem to be still relevant....Get forward, and .....pitch it up. Perhaps Butler or Stokes are positive enough to be captain, I don't know, but I do know that we have too many left handers. Still I am looking forward to today's play.

104 - 5
A two man batting team, one for each innings, farcical. Hoping we can at least survive until close of play. |

Bess and Buttler did well to hang on but I fear the damage is already done.
I find myself thinking "what happened to England?" A few years back they looked to be shaping up as world beaters. Cook and Root, Bairstow and Stokes in the middle - Moeen coming in at number 8 to score another century. Broad and Anderson in their pomp. Then it all went horribly wrong. |

They got older, the injuries take longer to recover, the little aches and niggles get more constant, and the game around you moves on, not too late to get back there, but it needs a change of mind set!
Well done young Dom Bess, spinner on debut with a 50! Not bad lad! |
