I'm also liking "clunge", used extensively in The Inbetweeners.

This has become a hot-button topic recently (in the U.S. anyway). As some previous posters have mentioned, it has attained the same taboo status as the word "nigger". Matter of fact, there is entire episode of NBC's sitcom "30 Rock" (The C-word, S01E14) that is centered around the use of the word "cunt".
The word "cunt", as a euphimism for both the vagina and as a generic term for women, has not been in popular usage since the late 60's/early 70's. Up to that point it was almost exclusively used by men. Then, as cross-gender communication began to open up during the "Sexual Revoulution", it began to fall out of favor. Neither sex was comfortable with it's use as a reference to the female anatomy. Obviously, this was in large part due to it's historical connotation. But maybe more importantly, is it's coarse, guttural pronunciation. New terms emerged for both references: As the actual vagina; Now called a "pussy" - comfortably, and almost exclusively by both sexes. When interacting with a female sexual partner it has that "soft and cuddly" feeling. Yet, it is also acceptable in male-to-male conversation and between women when speaking amonst themselves. As an unattached woman in general (specifically a promiscuous one); The term "slut" seems to have taken hold. It is in common usage, even to the point where it's not censored in the mainstream media. While crude and descriptive enough for men it is unoffensive to women. To the contrary, when describing their sexual appetites, some women are proud to refer to themselves as sluts. Also, esp. from the male perspective, terms like "babe" and "hottie" are commonly used as positive descriptions (along with negatives like "skank", "dog" etc.) when rating a woman's attractiveness. So anyway, what ever happened to the word "cunt"? For whatever reasons, it has re-emerged with a vengence, and is now a very powerful term ! Currently, it is considered to be the most offensive word one can use to describe a female - bar none! It connotes the most unlikeable, despicable and hated type of woman. It makes "bitch" seem like a term of endearment. It crosses all catagories and is without regard to race, age, social status, etc. Women are absolutely horrified by it's utterance. Men use it carefully even amongst themselves and save it for only the most extreme situations. No single word has the impact of "cunt" when used on women. It only works on women, and there is no equivilant male version. Nothing. Asshole comes the closest, but even that can have multiple/ambiguous connotations. Call your friend an "asshole" in a jocular, off-hand fashion or even in a moment of intense anger and life will still go on. Men just shrug it off and forget about it. Even women will get over being called an asshole pretty quick. On the other hand, to call a woman a cunt is an absolutely "last resort" type of tactic - once used there is no turning back. As a test, try using the c-word on your wife or girlfriend. Next time you get into a heated argument (say about money or yard work for example) and find yourself backed into a corner, pull out the big-gun. At the height of her tirade, point your finger and say "Listen, you ungrateful fucking cunt ..." and then continue with your closing statement. Trust me, it will elicit an entirely different reaction than calling her an asshole. Suffice it to say, she won't "just shrug it of and forget about it". |

I was recently introduced to a polite way of inferring the C-word: "See you next Tuesday."

I do actually like the word and think that it can be used in jest and as a vicious insult - it just depends on the tone used. As for it being used in TV shows, I will never forget two episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, the one with the "beloved aunt" (typoed as "beloved cunt") and another with the restaurant scene where a barrage of foul language includes the hilarious "carwash cunt" insult. Both Mrs S and I were in stitches for a good half an hour afterwards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5avCWvL7lw

Culchies (country folk) are worse than city folk. Cunt is an everyday word here, along with the rest. Some people are horrified and think it's fighting talk but they soon catch on. A phrase used a lot is cuntie bollicks; "hurry up cuntie bollicks"

I am now imagining that being barked by some burly bloke with an Ian Paisleyesque accent.

Thing is you have to watch yourself in certain situations incase a slip of the tongue occurs. Like funerals and so forth.

I work with a chap who, when annoyed with people, calls them "extinct fish". I asked him one day what he meant - he explained: "coelocanth" (silly cunt). Corny, I know, but funny, nevertheless.
"Cunt" can be a horrid word; but very sexy, as well. |
