 I am sure many of you saw the movie "Amadeus" a somewhat fictional account of the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the movie is the court composer Antonio Salieri who in the movie is seen as a mediocre composer and who was very jealous of Mozart and even tried to kill him, and Mozart was seen to often make fun of Salieri's music. All of this is pure fiction. Antonio Salieri was a very accomplished music composer. He was able to compose operas in three different languages and composed 37 operas in his lifetime. His operas were performed all over Europe. When he became the court composer for Emperor Joseph 11 he became aquainted with Mozart. They knew of each other and they repected each other's music and even collabarated on some of Mozart's music. After 1800 when Salieri stopped composing he became a music teacher. Among his students were the young Ludwig Van Beethoven, Franz Liszt and Franz Schubert. Unfortunately most of Salieri's music was not published and never survived to the present. Only a small amount of his works appear on disc. The one I have is a disc of some of his opera overtures. |
