Apologies if this is a little long, and perhaps self centered.

After my Dad passed I got dog to keep mom company. She was in her mid 80's and my hope was it would keep her occupied and make her a little more active taking the dog for walks. So I got a Schipperke, or as every owner calls them LBDD-Little Black Devil Dogs. Bonded with Mom from the first. Never more than a few feet away. Slept cuddled up next to Mom.Mom hand feed the dog steak, hamburger and roasted chicken.

As for me, the dog thought I was a chew toy for the first two years. Only paid attention to me when I had food or if the dog needed to go out. Wouldn't sit with me unless I had food, and then when the food was gone the dog would immediately jump down.

So here's my life: caretaker to a a mid 90 year old incontinent, very confused wanders away if left alone . I had to take the knobs off the stove because she turns it on and forgets. I tried hiring a helper but it freaks Mom out and really upsets her having strangers around. This is not the retirement I planned.

So, the other day, everything came crashing down. I just hit a wall. Sat down and really felt sorry for myself. Everything came boiling up and I just sat there with my head in my hands. Then I noticed for the first time in 11 years my Mom's dog sitting next to me and putting its paw on my leg. Head cocked to one side and I swear a concerned look on its face.

Made things better and perhaps I'm a little more important to the dog than I thought.

Touching and excellent story. It's said that dogs are one of the few animals that care and love their owners more than themselves. Maybe you've seen proof of that?

"Ashley, is a 1-year-old Pitbull, who was found by No More Pain Rescue in New Jersey, living in a supposed crack house, where the people who were her owners, rarely fed her, never took her outside and abused her. In the end, they also abandoned her.

When two members of the rescue got a call from a neighbour that there was a couple that lived in an abandoned house, with no heat or electricity and they had a dog, they sprung into action. Arriving at the house, they found no humans, only a skinny and frightened dog, living in a house with no windows, no warmth and feces everywhere. As soon as they took her out of the house, she brightened up and jumped into the car. It was at this point they noticed that she had cigarette burns on her head.


As No More Pain Rescue is just that, a rescue, they don’t have a shelter, but Erica Mahnken and her fiancé Micheal Favour, knew some firefighters in New York at the Fort Pitt station that had been without a dog for some time. They asked if the firefighters would be okay with fostering until they could find Ashley a new home. They agreed.

As soon as they walked into the station, it was like Ashley had come home. She went all over the house, greeting all the firefighters and just feeling generally comfortable, which was surprising for a dog coming from her situation. Three days later, the couple got a call asking if they could officially adopt Ashley.

From then on, she was an honorary firefighter, living in the station full time. She even got her own Instagram.

Now, everyday, she gets walked, played with, fed exceptionally well and most of all, she has a purpose. They take her out on short runs to fight fires and even has her own seat.

She does everything with the guys. Pumps iron with them, helps wash the trucks and she’s always underfoot when they’re cooking the meals.

All in all, she’s in an environment where they cherish her company and treat her as a member of the team. Every dog deserves that, and the actions of the Fort Pitt firehouse elevate them from heroes, to something greater than that: legends.

Now they’re just waiting on a doggie-sized FDNY fire helmet."
