Default Re: Who are/were The Greatest LIVE Band ever

I don't know ALL bands , and during the last decade I've been listening more to classical music, but, from what I saw and heard, I think that The Beatles were awesome live, before the children ruined their concerts with continuous screaming. The Who is GREAT (period ), ABBA was top notch, always performing on the highest level, U2 was really great in their early years (Bono was unstoppable), I love the McGarrigle/Wainwright clan performing live, Joy Division were mesmerizing, the Dead Kennedys were great fun (Jello Biafra is a great stage personality), and, as a solo artist, Jacques Brel was legendary. As was Johnny Cash. And Freddy Mercury, even though he had a band.

Other favorite bands, like the Velvet Underground and The Doors, were Great, too, but only when guys like Reed and Morrison had a good day. And after Edie Sedgwick left Warhol and, because of that, stopped dancing in the Factory, something was missing when VU performed.

I can't say who the best live band ever was or is, but in the early nineties, I saw Joe Jackson's Laughter and Lust tour at the Greek Theater in Berkley CA. It's without a doubt the best live performance I ever saw and I saw quite a few in the S.F. bay area from 1976-1993.

Perhaps it's because I had no expectations, I really didn't know his music well at all, a friend had called with an extra ticket the day of the show, but I was more blown away by that show than any other I ever saw.

For hard rock bands, Adam Bomb is a guitarist with a killer act when playing live. They say that he plays every chord as if it were his last...

For alternative rock bands, Midnight Oil are surprisingly good. In 1993, I saw them in Cincinnati during my summer off from high school. Where Nirvana and other bands of that era did their shows "unplugged", Midnight Oil plugged it in and used huge amps.

My best live experience was Moloko, the Statues tour. I saw them in the Georg Elser Hallen in Munich, a rather small venue.
Roisin Murphy was a blast as she danced around the stage. I only had the chance to see them once.

Second best was Anne Clark, the Acoustic Tour.

But my all time favourite is and always will be Suzanne Vega. I try to catch her at least once a year somewhere in Europe.
I have seen her in Paris, Vienna, Zuerich, Wuppertal and more. Maybe someday I manage to see her in New York!

For me The Police, Punk energy, prog, jazz, rock influences created New Wave pop rock. And all 3 members could really play. AND (I've said this before) the reason I learnt to play Guitar, Bass, Percussion, Keyboards, Hell why I learnt Music.

I can improvise Roxanne for hours. This forum needs a Musicians corner.
